Water lilies, Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil W1695 museumhand painted reproduction

A large cream and pink cloud is reflected in the center of the pool, surrounded by bluish green water. The water lilies form several layers: a tight band at the top, groups spaced further apart around the reflection, then large leaves in the foreground. Signed and dated 1906, this version preserved in Cairo combines very clear light with a solidly rhythmic composition.

Look at the work

The reflection of a clear cloud opens the center, while the water lilies stretch from the bottom to the foreground

In the upper part, the leaves tighten into long horizontal bands. They mix green gray, blue, pink and a few light flowers. The center then opens onto a large cream shape with blurred edges, crossed by blue and pink. This luminous breathing separates the different planes of the pool.

Downward, the leaves become larger and more isolated. Some are turquoise, others olive green or purple, with pink flowers placed at irregular intervals. The signature "Claude Monet 1906" appears at the bottom right, in a light area which retains the readability of the gesture.

Depth arises from the alternation between layers of leaves and large reflective zones, not from a visible bank or horizon.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A central reflection that organizes the composition

The cream shape is not an empty opening. Its edges absorb blues, greens and pinks, which connects it to water while giving distance to the leaves surrounding it.

02

Water lilies divided into floors

Small, tight leaves at the top, intermediate groups in the center, and large shapes at the bottom build measurable depth. Faithful reproduction must preserve this progression.

03

A date integrated into the painting

The red-brown signature and the year 1906 stand out in the lower right corner without dominating the stage. Their position helps identify this version among the many Water Lilies.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only available reference image measures 2000 × 1654 px. It has been kept at its native definition and converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A balance between water and vegetation

Leaves never occupy the entire surface. Intervals of clear water give air to groups and allow the reflection of the sky to remain the main motif.

Color02

Greens cooled by blue

Sage green, turquoise and blue gray form the background, while pink and cream warm the flowers and cloud. Balance depends on smooth transitions rather than sharp contrasts.

Matter03

A shorter touch in the leaves

Floating discs are constructed by horizontal gestures, sometimes highlighted with a dark edge. The central reflection uses a more diffuse and less drawn material.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns the Water Lilies from 1906 kept at the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum in Cairo, Wildenstein 1695.

Identification01

Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum, Wildenstein 1695

The documentation indicates an oil on canvas measuring 81 × 100 cm, signed and dated "Claude Monet 1906" at the bottom right. The catalog raisonné classifies it under number 1695.

Collection02

A work preserved in Cairo

The painting belongs to the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum, housed in the collector's former home in Cairo. The collection brings together an important collection of 19th century European art.

1906 series03

The basin without bridge or horizon line

On this date, Monet abandoned the Japanese bridge in several compositions and directly framed the water. The leaves, flowers and reflected sky are enough to build a space without terrestrial reference.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum, Wildenstein 1695
  • The original horizontal format of 81 × 100 cm
  • The large cream reflection kept bright but crossed by nuances
  • The progression of the leaves preserved from the tight bottom to the fuller foreground
