Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1907 · Marmottan Monet Museum · W1714
A large pink reflection descends into the center of almost nocturnal blue-green water. The water lilies form several horizontal bands which intersect this luminous vertical, then gather in the foreground around the signature. The vertical format transforms the pool into a fall of light rather than an extended landscape.

Look at the work
The upper part is the darkest. Blues, greens and purples form a compact surface, crossed by a first pink passage. Further down, the light widens to occupy almost the entire left half, while a drop of dark foliage descends to the right.
The leaves appear in stepped groups. Their horizontal direction slows down the descent of the gaze and gives several depths to the water. At the bottom of the canvas, the shapes become wider and more readable; the signature and date Claude Monet 1907 are inscribed in the lower right corner.
The canvas holds in the tension between two directions: the reflection falls vertically, but the water lilies constantly bring the gaze to the surface.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The reflection mixes pale pink, mauve, blue-gray and some warm browns. Its boundaries remain irregular and are constantly interrupted by leaves.
The top groups are thin and tight; those at the bottom become larger. This variation is enough to build depth despite the absence of shore and horizon.
The large blue-green mass descends from the upper edge and tightens the clear passage. It must retain internal variations so as not to become a flat black.
Details and visual documents
The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The available reference view measures 783 × 1075 px. The two details of 620 × 620 px and 620 × 600 px are native cropping, without enlargement. The identity has been checked in the instructions of the Marmottan Monet Museum and the three files are real WebPs.
Documented benchmarks
These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.
The museum dates this oil on canvas from 1907. It measures 100 × 73 cm, or 123.3 × 96.7 × 5.4 cm with its frame, and bears the signature and date Claude Monet 1907 at the bottom right.
The work comes from the studio collection sent by Michel Monet to the Academy of Fine Arts. This legacy makes the Marmottan Monet Museum the custodian of an exceptional set of paintings preserved by the artist's family.
In the easel paintings painted between 1903 and 1907, Monet gradually removed the bank and the direct sky. Plants, clouds and trees are only visible through their reflection, which mentally enlarges a limited format.
