Water lilies W1695hand painted reproduction

Two groups of water lilies frame a large gap of creamy pink light. In the water, the green and blue reflections of the trees mingle with the clouds while the leaves remain clearly placed on the surface. Signed and dated 1906, this version marks the moment when Monet eliminates all shore to make the basin an autonomous world.

Look at the work

A pink light in the center of the pool, surrounded by leaves and green reflections

The composition is organized around an irregular luminous space that crosses the center. The leaves form two main groups, one near the upper edge and the other in the lower half. Their arrangement provides a visual passage between foreground and reflected depth.

Warm greens mix with turquoise and blue gray. The central light is never white: it contains pink, peach and small traces of purple. A few brighter flowers punctuate the leaf masses and prevent the general softness from erasing the details.

W1695 makes the pond an unstable mirror: the leaves float in front of a light that seems to come from much further away.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A waterscape without edge or horizon

In 1906, Monet looked directly at the surface of the basin. The traditional elements of the landscape disappear; the sky and the trees only remain through their reflections. This deletion makes the orientation of the painting deliberately ambiguous.

02

A signed and dated canvas

The inscription "Claude Monet 1906" appears at the bottom right. The catalog raisonné identifies this version under number 1695 and links it to the group of water landscapes prepared for the major Durand-Ruel exhibition of 1909.

03

A work preserved in Cairo

The painting belongs to the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum. This Egyptian collection brings together several major French works from the 19th and 20th centuries and preserves this horizontal version of 81 × 100 cm.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is used. The full view of the Cairo version is preserved as a true WebP of 2000 × 1654 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Two crowns of leaves around a light center

The top and bottom leaves never completely close the space. Their irregularities give the light passage a moving shape and prevent decorative symmetry.

Color02

Sage green, turquoise, cream pink and gray blue

Cool colors dominate the edges, while the center receives diffused heat. Pink and white flowers provide the transition between these two areas.

Matter03

Brief impasto on leaves, soft layers in water

Water lilies require firmer material and interrupted contours. The reflections must remain transparent, crossed by vertical and horizontal gestures which respond to each other.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The instructions for the Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum version and the catalog raisonné identify this painting as Wildenstein 1695.

Identification01

Wildenstein 1695

This oil on canvas from 1906 measures 81 × 100 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 1906" at the bottom right.

Collection02

Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum

The work is kept in Cairo in the museum built around the collection of Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil and his wife.

Cycle03

The waterscapes of Giverny

Monet worked intensely on the basin between 1903 and 1908. By removing the bank, he brought together on the same plane the real flowers, the reflected sky and the off-camera vegetation.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Cairo version, Wildenstein 1695
  • The original format of 81 × 100 cm
  • The cream pink hole kept bright without turning white
  • Green leaves and blue reflections distinguished by their direction of touch
