Water lilies, Kuboso W1713hand painted reproduction

In this vertical canvas from 1907, the pool appears to tilt in front of the viewer. Orange-yellow reflections descend from above, while dark leaves form an irregular chain in the lower half. The sky, trees and water are no longer separated by any horizon.

Look at the work

A column of light descends into the water between two groups of water lilies

The upper part is the lightest. Lemon yellows, pinks and bluish grays mingle in long vertical traces. In the center, a warmer glow widens downward and gives the reflection an almost incandescent depth.

Water lily leaves appear mainly in the lower third. They are painted blue, black, green and purple, with some orange contours. Their discontinuous arrangement slows down the descent of the gaze and makes the surface of the water felt without drawing it.

The vertical format transforms the pool into luminous depth: the eye no longer looks at a landscape in the distance, it descends in its reflections.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Water Lilies, Kuboso W1713 - Claude Monet
01

A rare format in the 1907 series

The museum links this work to a group of approximately fifteen vertical water lilies painted that year. The reproduction must maintain this slender ratio of 100 × 81 cm.

02

A warm light amidst the cold tones

Yellow and orange go through grays, mauves and blues. Saturating the light area too much would cause it to lose its diffuse character; whitening it too much would erase its heat.

03

Leaves that fix the surface

Dark water lilies serve as foreground landmarks. Their edges remain fragmented and their spacing irregular, which avoids closing the depth of the reflections.

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The vertical light of reflectionsThe upper crop reveals yellows, pinks and blue grays laid in crossed layers. Light is born from their transparencies rather than a uniform white.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

A vertical canvas from 1907

The Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts lists an oil on canvas measuring 100 × 81 cm. This version corresponds to number 1713 of Daniel Wildenstein's catalog raisonné.

Set of 190702

About fifteen vertical compositions

The museum notice specifies that Monet created in 1907 a group of around fifteen Water Lilies adopting this vertical framing, unusual within the series.

Water Garden03

A pattern developed after pelvic enlargement

Monet purchased his property in Giverny in 1890 then enlarged the basin in 1901 -1902. The museum places this painting in the vast collection of around two hundred paintings devoted to the basin.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact vertical version of the Kuboso Museum, W1713
  • The original ratio of 100 × 81 cm
  • The preserved orange-yellow column diffuses and nuances
  • Dark water lilies spaced without regular contours
