The Water Lilies Basinhand painted reproduction

No shore, no horizon: the entire canvas becomes the surface of the pool. Islets of pink and cream water lilies float in a green, turquoise, rust and purple network where vertical reflections are constantly covered by new layers.

Look at the work

A fragment of water widened to become a wall space

Water lily groups are distributed around a quieter, lilac blue center. On the left, the leaves accumulate in thick masses; on the right, pink flowers punctuate darker greens. These two hearths maintain the balance of a format twice as wide as it is tall.

Under the flowers, the directions cross. The long greenish descents suggest the reflected trees, while blue and yellow horizontal gestures reaffirm the surface of the water. Brown and orange areas appear under the upper layers and give the whole an almost mineral depth.

The eye no longer looks at the pool from its bank: it enters a surface where depth, reflection and matter simultaneously occupy the same plane.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Le Bassin aux nymphéas - Claude Monet
01

Groups of flowers moved throughout the work

Technical review shows that Monet added, removed and moved water lilies at several stages. Their irregular distribution is therefore an essential construction.

02

A material mounted layer after layer

The surface was largely constructed by thick wet-on-dry applications. Green, blue, rust and purple strata must remain noticeable.

03

Deliberately less finished edges

The preparation and thinner layers remain visible near the corners. Faithful reproduction should not even out these breaths.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The water lilies of the left halfThe red, pink and cream flowers rest on thick leaves, sometimes taken up over the reflections. The detail shows partially mixed colors directly in the key.

Pink flowers and right reflectionsThe warm little accents stand out from a green, turquoise and rust field. Their rarity gives the stopping points in a very mobile surface.

The official view measures 3000 × 1947 px. The two details of 1400 × 900 px are direct cropping of the same photograph. No files have been enlarged; all three images are real WebPs.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory 1982.825, Wildenstein catalog 1889

This oil on canvas measures 130.2 × 201.9 cm. A succession stamp, formerly visible at the bottom right, has since been removed. The work is a gift from Mrs. Harvey Kaplan.

Great decoration02

A group of nineteen paintings painted around 1917 -1919

This format belongs to the surface studies of the basin which accompanied the development of the monumental panels offered to France in 1922 and installed at the Orangerie in 1927.

Support03

Prepared linen probably ordered to measure

The format slightly exceeds the largest standard dimensions announced at the time. The off-white background remains visible in places under a very textured material.
