Claude Monet · Argenteuil between 1872 and 1873 · Musée d'Orsay
A flotilla of sailboats gathers on the Seine at Argenteuil. The masts cut through the sky, the dark hulls extend into the water and a white sail attracts light to the left. Monet transforms modern leisure into a composition of verticals, reflections and light colors.

Look at the work
Five main boats occupy the center. Their black, green and ocher hulls overlap without obscuring the water passages. On the left, an inflated white sail creates the brightest point; behind it, the bell tower of Saint-Denys discreetly locates Argenteuil.
On the right, a shrub-covered bank advances near the boats and cuts the horizon. The pale yellow and blue sky is reflected in the Seine in short touches. Under each hull, the masts extend into broken lines, less clear than their actual verticals.
The flotilla appears motionless, but the composition remains mobile: masts, hulls and reflections respond to each other according to always different rhythms.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The boats overlap like colorful shapes. Their different sizes and orientations avoid decorative alignment.
It immediately detaches itself against the darker background and then leads towards the other masts, then towards the right bank.
Verticals extend into the water, but horizontal keys interrupt them. The mirror remains readable without becoming symmetrical.
Reference image
The official reference corresponds to RF 2437, W229. It restores the signature at the bottom left, the white sail, the bell tower and the exact position of the moored boats.
Each mast contributes to the structure, from the central mainsailboat to the lower boats on the right.
Blue gray, cream, green and pink mix in small touches which carry the shells without forming a flat surface.
Masts, ropes and prows receive a few firm lines; vegetation and distance remain more open.
Documented benchmarks
The Musée d'Orsay documents this Argenteuil painting, dated between 1872 and 1873, under the references RF 2437 and Wildenstein 229.
The merchant acquired the work directly from Monet in February 1873, when the views of Argenteuil became a major axis of his work.
The banker and collector owned the painting from 1882 and gave it to the State subject to usufruct in 1923.
The notice specifies that the painting was presented in a triptych with a work by Pissarro and one by Sisley, today inventoried RF 2436 and RF 2435.

Presentation in your interior
This nautical scene combines light blues, deep greens and a large ivory accent. It brings calm light to a living room, dining room or house near the water; an oak, pale gold or blue-gray frame particularly suits it.
