À propos de l’œuvre

Chalets, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Mid-September - mid-November 1883 · Nieuw-Amsterdam, Drenthe

Chalets in Drenthe, F17Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A row of low farms stretches under a gray-green sky, on the edge of a dark, damp earth. Painted shortly after Van Gogh's arrival in Drenthe, this panorama makes thatched roofs the real subject of the landscape.

Look at the work

Low farms under an immense sky

On the left, a small gabled house precedes a wider red building whose roof goes almost to the ground. Other volumes of thatch extend to the right like an irregular chain.

The foreground is crossed by brown, green and black bands which evoke peat and ditches. The sky, almost empty, occupies almost half of the canvas and envelops the houses in cold light.

Chalets in the Drenthe F17/JH395 is a 35.5 × 55.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Nieuw-Amsterdam between mid-September and mid-November 1883. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0053V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh constructs the space in long horizontal bands, but breaks this stability with gables and chimneys. The buildings remain dark without blending in, thanks to shades of red-brown, olive and gray.

01

The roofs form a continuous line

Each farm has a different silhouette, yet their large slopes respond to each other. This succession gives the hamlet a slow and compact rhythm.

02

The foreground keeps track of the ground

The thick, sinuous touches don't describe every plant. They make a land full of water, dug with furrows and strips of low vegetation.

03

The sky unifies the whole scene

Grey-green and muted blue blend together without clearly defined clouds. This diffused light detaches the chimneys and accentuates the isolated character of the homes.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Van Gogh Museum's scientific catalog identifies the work by F17/JH395 and inventory s0053V1962. Its dating corresponds to the first weeks of Van Gogh's stay in the province of Drenthe.

Drenthe

A brief stay in Nieuw-Amsterdam

Van Gogh left The Hague in September 1883 to seek a countryside less transformed by industry. He remained in this region of moors and peat bogs for about three months.

Pattern

Peasant residences as "human nests"

Old thatched roofs interest him as much for their shape as for the life they shelter. This attention to rural dwellings will then continue in Nuenen.

Collection

A work from the Van Gogh Museum

The painting belongs to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation and is kept in Amsterdam. Its number s0053V1962 distinguishes this version from the numerous cottages of 1885.

  • The irregular chain of thatched roofs
  • The small light gable on the left
  • The big red-brown farm
  • The dark bands of damp soil
  • The vast gray-green sky
