Three young women in a boat, between foliage and reflections

The hull crosses the upper part of the painting horizontally and tilts slightly to the right. Germaine, standing on the left, introduces a strong vertical; Suzanne sits in the center under a yellow hat, while Blanche closes the group on the right, near the edge of the boat.

The background and water mix very dark greens, blue, purple and brown. The white, cream and pale blue dresses concentrate the light, with a few pink touches in the faces and reflections. Under the boat, the inverted silhouettes deform in almost black water.

Light dresses do not float in front of a decor: they light up the scene from the inside, then extend into vertical reflections that connect the young women to the water.

Standing, sitting then leaning, each figure has a different attitude. This alternation animates the horizontal of the boat and avoids the effect of a still row.

The sky and the horizon are absent. In this plant darkness, dresses and hats become the main bright areas and immediately organize reading.

Stretched reflections under the figures

The clear, red verticals of the water do not accurately copy bodies. They translate their movement on a disturbed surface and extend the composition to the lower edge.

This depth gives all its shine to the dresses. Evenly lightening the foliage would reduce contrast and make the enveloping atmosphere disappear.

Matter03

Keep the reflections fragmented under the boat

Inverted shapes must remain discontinuous, crossed by green and blue. A mirror that is too sharp would be contrary to Monet's moving touch.

A Norwegian boat in Giverny

The work also bears the title La Barque à Giverny. The Norwegian word refers to the type of reclining boat used by the group, not a landscape painted in Norway.

Provenance03

The legacy of Princess Edmond de Polignac

Preserved until 1944 by Winnaretta Singer, Princess Edmond de Polignac, the painting was accepted by the State as part of her legacy in 1947. She joined the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
