À propos de l’œuvre

En norvégienne, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Giverny · circa 1887 · W1151

In Norwegian W1151hand painted reproduction

Germaine, Suzanne and Blanche Hoschedé occupy a long Norwegian-style boat on the Epte in Giverny. A young woman stands with a cane, the second sits in the center and the third leans to the right; their light dresses and hats appear in front of a dark plant bank. This oil on canvas from around 1887, measuring 97.5 × 130.5 cm, is kept in front of a dark plant bank. Look at the work

Three young women in a boat, between foliage and reflections

The hull crosses the upper part of the painting horizontally and tilts slightly to the right. Germaine, standing on the left, introduces a strong vertical; Suzanne sits in the center under a yellow hat, while Blanche closes the group on the right, near the edge of the boat.

The background and water mix very dark greens, blue, purple and brown. The white, cream and pale blue dresses concentrate the light, with a few pink touches in the faces and reflections. Under the boat, the inverted silhouettes deform in almost black water.

Light dresses do not float in front of a decor: they light up the scene from the inside, then extend into vertical reflections that connect the young women to the water.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A group distributed along the entire length of the hull

Standing, sitting then leaning, each figure has a different attitude. This alternation animates the horizontal of the boat and avoids the effect of a still row.

02

The light carried by clothes

The sky and the horizon are absent. In this plant darkness, dresses and hats become the main bright areas and immediately organize reading.

03

Stretched reflections under the figures

The clear, red verticals of the water do not accurately copy bodies. They translate their movement on a disturbed surface and extend the composition to the lower edge.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1151 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 1024 × 764 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain the three distinct attitudes

Germaine standing, Suzanne in the center and Blanche on the right form the narrative signature of W1151. Their gestures must remain readable without hardening the contours.

Color02

Preserve the almost black green background

This depth gives all its shine to the dresses. Evenly lightening the foliage would reduce contrast and make the enveloping atmosphere disappear.

Matter03

Keep the reflections fragmented under the boat

Inverted shapes must remain discontinuous, crossed by green and blue. A mirror that is too sharp would be contrary to Monet's moving touch.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay preserves In Norwegian, oil on canvas circa 1887, 97.5 × 130.5 cm, inventory RF 1944 20 and catalog Wildenstein 1151.

Characters01

Germaine, Suzanne and Blanche Hoschedé

The indexing of the Musée d'Orsay names Alice Hoschedé's three daughters. The painting is thus at the same time a walking scene, a collective portrait and a study of reflections on the Epte.

Title02

A Norwegian boat in Giverny

The work also bears the title La Barque à Giverny. The Norwegian word refers to the type of reclining boat used by the group, not a landscape painted in Norway.

Provenance03

The legacy of Princess Edmond de Polignac

Preserved until 1944 by Winnaretta Singer, Princess Edmond de Polignac, the painting was accepted by the State as part of her legacy in 1947. She joined the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1151 version
  • Germaine standing, Suzanne in the center and Blanche on the right
  • The long dark hull on the Epte
  • Light dresses and their reflections in green water

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal composition is suitable for a living room, office or bedroom. A deep green, midnight blue or cream wall and a dark setting accentuate the light of the dresses and the calm of the river.
