Nymphéas et Agapanthes, par Claude Monet

Water lilies and Agapanthus, Marmottan W1821hand painted reproduction

Water lily leaves occupy the lower left while tall agapanthus rise on the right. Between the two, the water reflects mauves, blues and greens in vertical touches. This painting from 1914 -1917, kept at the Marmottan Monet museum, combines two motifs from the Giverny garden in a composition that is now tighter than its original format.

Look at the work

Water lilies float in the foreground while agapanthus provide a vertical counterpoint on the right

The bottom is animated by large olive green and gray blue leaves, crossed with pink and white flowers. They overlap without symmetry and reveal passages of purple water. Their density gives the viewer an immediate entry point.

On the right, the agapanthus stems and flowers develop in upward gestures. The background remains mobile: green, blue and mauve intersect like reflections rather than like a fixed decoration. The contrast between floating and elevation structures the entire canvas.

Two rhythms of the garden respond to each other: the horizontal discs of the water lilies and the vertical thrust of the agapanthus.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Two clearly separated families of shapes

Round leaves concentrate at the bottom and left; the stems rise on the right. Faithful reproduction must preserve this opposition without isolating plants from the same field of reflections.

02

A currently reduced composition

The museum notice indicates current dimensions of 140 × 120 cm, compared to around 200 × 130 cm originally. The reading must therefore follow the present state of the canvas, without inventing the missing part.

03

A space built by neighboring colors

Blue, green, purple and pink mingle with few contours. Depth arises from their variations in value and temperature, particularly around light flowers.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1954 × 2200 px. It has been converted to a real WebP without artificial enlargement, with the colors and framing of the current state preserved.

Composition01

A diagonal balance

The weight of the water lilies at the bottom left is compensated by the agapanthus on the right. This diagonal keeps the composition open despite its vertical format.

Color02

Purples in the heart of greens

Purple reflections connect flowers to areas of water. They must remain present even in dark passages in order to avoid a uniform green cast.

Matter03

Gestures adapted to each pattern

The leaves are laid in broad, curved touches; the stems in longer strokes. Maintaining these rhythms makes the painter's hand feel.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns the work of the Marmottan Monet museum, inventory 5084 and Wildenstein 1821.

Identification01

Marmottan 5084, Wildenstein 1821

The museum dates the oil on canvas to 1914 -1917. It currently measures 140 × 120 cm and is numbered 1821 in the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Material condition02

Current format shorter than original

The instructions indicate an original format of approximately 200 × 130 cm. The upper part is no longer present, which explains the current concentration of patterns.

Collection03

Legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

The work entered the museum with the bequest of Michel Monet in 1966. A workshop stamp appears at the bottom left, an element also indicated by the official notice.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version Marmottan 5084, Wildenstein 1821
  • The current format of 140 × 120 cm respected
  • The rhythmic separation between floating leaves and erect agapanthus
  • The mauve and blue shades maintained within the greens
