À propos de l’œuvre

Nymphéas, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1907 · Kuboso Memorial Museum · W1713

Water lilies, Kuboso W1713hand painted reproduction

In this vertical canvas from 1907, the Giverny basin is framed without a bank and without a horizon. Round leaves and a few pink flowers mainly occupy the upper half, then become spaced out as the gaze descends towards darker water. The blue, purple and green reflections transform the actual depth of the pool into a moving surface where the shapes appear and then dissolve.

Look at the work

Water lilies disperse from top to bottom and gradually let reflections invade the vertical format

The upper area brings together the main flowers, small pink and white touches placed in the middle of green or purple leaves. The contours remain irregular: some leaves are clearly perceptible, others blend into the water and only remain through a difference in temperature.

In the lower half, floating patterns become rarer. Vertical blue-purple gestures suggest reflected trees and sky, while horizontal markings recall the surface of the water. This alternation creates depth without traditional perspective.

The rarer the leaves become, the more difficult the water becomes to locate: reflection, depth and surface occupy the same painted space.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A format designed for top-down reading

The height of 100 cm dominates the width of 81 cm. The gaze passes from the groups of flowers at the top to the more open reflections at the bottom, a movement which would disappear in a horizontal cropping.

02

A deliberately unequal density

Monet does not distribute water lilies decoratively. The leaves are concentrated in islets, with wide intervals of water, which gives each flower a precise function in the general rhythm.

03

The reflection as colorful depth

Blues and purples do not form a uniform background. They receive greens, browns and grays which correspond to plants and off-camera light, then mix with floating leaves.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1,319 × 1,628 px. It has been converted to true WebP at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Clear marks in the upper half

Pink flowers and pale leaves first catch the eye. Their small number and position must remain faithful to maintain the balance of the format.

Color02

A cold palette that is never monochrome

Blue changes from cobalt to lavender gray; green warms up near the leaves and pink introduces some accents. Transitions matter as much as the most visible colors.

Matter03

Gestures adapted to each pattern

The leaves are suggested by more rounded touches, the reflections by vertical marks and the water by more horizontal passages. Their superposition produces the vibration of the pelvis.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These markers apply to the Water Lilies of the Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts, registered under Wildenstein number 1713.

Identification01

Kuboso, Wildenstein 1713

The Izumi Museum preserves this oil on canvas dated 1907. The original measures 100 cm high by 81 cm wide and belongs to the first large cycle dedicated to the Giverny basin.

A framing without a horizon line02

Sky is only visible by reflection

Monet eliminates any stable shore. The viewer only sees water, leaves and reflected colors, a process that transforms the landscape into an autonomous construction.

Conservation in Japan03

Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts in Izumi

This version is kept in the collection of the Kuboso Museum, in Izumi. Its vertical format and its few pink flowers allow it to be distinguished from the numerous horizontal variants of 1907.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Kuboso Memorial Museum, Wildenstein 1713
  • The original vertical ratio of 100 × 81 cm
  • The concentration of flowers in the upper half of the pond
  • Blues, purples, greens and pinks kept distinct in reflections

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Purple blue, sea green, lavender gray, pink and soft brown give this vertical reproduction a deep and calm atmosphere. It naturally finds its place on a narrow wall, in an entrance or between two openings.
