Nymphéas, par Claude Monet

Water lilies, Kuboso W1713hand painted reproduction

A few pink and white water lilies float on water where blue, purple and green overlap. The vertical format narrows the gaze on the surface of the pool, without showing the bank or the sky. Painted in 1907, this version preserved in Izumi transforms the reflection into an unstable depth, animated by scattered leaves.

Look at the work

The vertical format lowers the gaze through the reflections, from the light leaves at the top to the blue shadows of the pool

The main leaves cluster in the upper half, where several pink flowers create bright spots. Their shapes remain irregular and some merge with the spots of color that represent water.

Downwards, water lilies become rarer. The blue, purple and green gestures lengthen and reveal vertical reflections. This gradual reduction in patterns accentuates the depth of the small format.

By removing the horizon, Monet transforms a piece of pool into an autonomous space, where color serves as perspective.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A rare vertical format for the pool

The height of 100 cm and the width of 81 cm require a downward reading. The composition must not be adapted to the landscape, otherwise it will lose its rhythm.

02

Leaves placed over several depths

Some leaves appear to float in the foreground, others dissolve in reflections. Differences in sharpness should remain gradual.

03

A cold vibration punctuated with pink

Blue and purple dominate, but greens and browns connect them. Pink flowers remain few in number and serve as landmarks throughout the surface.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1,319 × 1,628 px. It has been converted to true WebP at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Irregular groups rather than uniform sowing

The leaves are brought together at the top then more isolated at the bottom. This spacing builds vertical circulation of the gaze.

Color02

Blue, purple and green under a silvery light

The cold palette maintains warm passages in the contours and flowers. Faithful reproduction should avoid a monochrome blue.

Matter03

Keys that change direction

The leaves are more rounded, the water more vertical and the flowers treated with small accents. These different writings make the pattern readable without a strong drawing.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern the Water Lilies of the Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts, Wildenstein 1713.

Identification01

Kuboso, Wildenstein 1713

The Izumi Museum preserves this oil on canvas from 1907, 100 cm high and 81 cm wide. The catalog raisonné gives it the number 1713.

Date02

A major year of the first cycle

In 1907, Monet multiplied the close-up views of the basin. He explored vertical and horizontal framing before the exhibition of the series at Durand-Ruel in 1909.

Subject03

A surface without visible sky

The sky only appears indirectly, through its reflection in the water. This device removes the horizon and focuses attention on the colorful depth of the pool.
