Water lilies, Kuboso Museum W1713hand painted reproduction

A golden reflection crosses the center of the pool, between an almost nocturnal upper area and water lilies gathered at the bottom. In this vertical version from 1907, Monet paints neither bank nor horizon: the gaze sinks directly into the water, where the sky, trees and floating leaves simultaneously occupy the surface.

Look at the work

A gap of light descends into the center of a deep pool, then meets the tight leaves in the foreground

The upper part is built by long touches of blue, black, deep green and purple. They suggest the reflection of the trees without drawing their branches. A lighter band opens in the middle, irregular and warm, as if the sky passed between the plant masses.

In the lower third, the leaves overlap and change scale. Olive green, turquoise and brown surround some pink flowers. Their edges remain supple: it is the contrast with the dark water, and not a continuous outline, which gives them their presence.

The vertical format transforms the pool in depth: the light seems to descend into the water before returning to the surface among the water lilies.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A rare vertical in the 1907 series

The museum links the painting to a group of around fifteen vertical water lilies painted that year. The height concentrates the movement of the reflection and gives the foreground a particular density.

02

A bright center without a horizon line

The golden band does not represent an isolated object. It is born from a succession of cream, pink and light green touches which separate two dark areas while maintaining the continuity of the water.

03

Water lilies built by covering

The bottom leaves do not form a regular pattern. Some fade into reflection, others have a clearer accent; this hierarchy must remain visible in reproduction.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1,319 × 1,628 px. It has been converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement and faithfully retains the vertical ratio of the work.

Composition01

A descent from dark to leaves

The gaze follows the clear central passage, then stops on the bottom floating discs. Respecting this direction is essential to maintain vertical momentum.

Color02

Greens cooled by blue and purple

The pool combines deep blue, emerald green, olive, mauve and a few roses. Dark areas should remain colored and never turn black.

Matter03

A visible but not uniform touch

The reflections use elongated gestures while the leaves are placed in wider marks. This difference in direction gives the surface its vibration.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These references concern the version kept in Izumi, registered under the number Wildenstein 1713.

Identification01

Water Lilies, 1907, Wildenstein 1713

The notice from the Kuboso Memorial Museum dates this oil on canvas from 1907 and publishes dimensions of 100 × 81 cm. The work corresponds to number 1713 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Series02

One of the vertical formats from 1907

The museum places the painting among around fifteen vertical compositions painted in 1907. They explore the basin without a bank, through the sole relationship between reflections, water and vegetation.

Giverny03

An enlarged basin before this campaign

Monet acquired his property in Giverny in 1890 and had his water garden enlarged in 1901 -1902. A few years later, this motif became an autonomous pictorial space.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Kuboso Museum, Wildenstein 1713
  • The original vertical ratio of 100 × 81 cm
  • The golden gap preserved without uniformly lightening the pool
  • Blacks replaced by mixtures of blue, green and purple

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Deep blue, dark green, pale gold, olive and pink give this vertical reproduction a calm and enveloping presence. It goes well with a light wall, natural wood or midnight blue textiles.
