A sheet of leaves and flowers passes through blue-purple water designed to scale the Great Decorations

Water lilies form an irregular band that widens in the center then disperses towards the ends. The leaves mix green, ocher, red-brown and purple; light flowers appear in small touches. This horizontal structure maintains the surface in front of the viewer despite the depth of the reflections.

Under the leaves, the water is worked in superimposed blues, mauves and greens. Vertical gestures evoke willows and plants located off-camera, while more flexible movements blur their shapes. Monet does not paint a still mirror, but several layers of simultaneous perception.

On the scale of this canvas, the pool is no longer a garden view: it becomes an environment of color which prepares the immersion of the Great Decorations.
