On deep blue water, three pink flowers and a single white water lily emerge between large green leaves. The luminous reflections of a weeping willow descend from above without the tree itself being visible. At this scale, Monet no longer represents a simple pool: he envelops the eye in a field of color.
Look at the work
Water lilies mainly occupy the right half and the lower part. On the left, a large blue area lets the water breathe and welcomes the small white flower. The leaves overlap upwards, where their outline dissolves into the long green touches of the reflected willow.
Depth arises from a paradox: flowers and leaves assert the surface, while vertical reflections open up a space behind them. Monet renounces the shore and the horizon. The viewer can read the canvas as a landscape of water or as an almost abstract composition of blue, green and pink.
W1796 transforms the pool into a pictorial environment: the surface seems close, but the reflections open up limitless depth.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
With its 151.4 × 201 cm, the canvas goes far beyond the water landscapes of 1903 -1908. Monet enlarges the motif and reduces the spatial landmarks, preparing the immersive research which will culminate in the large panels of the Orangery.
The Pinakothek notice describes the hanging branches of a willow located outside the frame. Their green reflection crosses the blue surface and connects what we see in the water with what exists beyond the painting.
The painting belongs to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and has inventory number 14562. Acquired on the art market in 1978, it is cataloged by Wildenstein under number 1796.
Reference image
Only one reference image is displayed. The file corresponding to the Munich version is kept as a real WebP of 2,200 × 1,646 px, without artificial enlargement.
The less charged space around the white water lily balances the denser groups of leaves. It must remain deep and modulated, without becoming a uniform flat surface.
The blues change from cyan to purple. The greens vary from dark to yellow. The four flowers, few in number, thus gain a particular intensity.
The leaves are constructed by broad, superimposed gestures; the reflections extend vertically. Reproduction must maintain this scale of gesture to avoid too careful rendering.
Documented benchmarks
The official notice of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen documents this version under inventory 14562; the Wildenstein catalog gives it the number 1796.
This oil on canvas is dated around 1915 and measures 151.4 × 201 cm. It belongs to the group of large Water Lilies painted by Monet from 1914.
The work is kept in Munich in the collections of the Neue Pinakothek. It was acquired on the art market in 1978.
The museum notice identifies long green marks like reflections of willow branches. This indirect presence allows Monet to evoke the entire garden without showing either trunk, bank or sky.
