A column of yellow and pink light descends into the middle of the pool, between almost nocturnal purple reflections. The water lilies tighten at the top then return in small groups to the foreground. This vertical version from 1907 transforms the Giverny pond into a space without a bank where the water receives the sky, the trees and the sun.
Look at the work
The light strip is not rigidly centered: it widens as it descends and bypasses several groups of leaves. The edges remain darker, loaded with brown, purple and blue. This contrast draws the eye towards the depth while reminding us that the entire scene is played out on the surface of the pool.
The upper water lilies appear as light touches taken in the reflections. In the foreground, the leaves become wider and darker. The signature and date "Claude Monet 1907" are at the bottom right, in an area where orange and mauve meet.
W1713 does not paint a sunset above the garden: it paints its light spilled into the water.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet removes the shore and direct sky. The vertical format prolongs reflections and gives the light a downward trajectory. The horizontal leaves interrupt this flow and make the surface of the pool perceptible.
Yellow, peach and pink form the brightest area. Around, purples, blues and browns maintain the density of the reflection of the trees. Reproduction must preserve the transitions between these two families rather than separating them into flat areas.
The Kuboso Museum in Izumi preserves this Water Lilies from 1907, presented in the exhibitions dedicated to Western paintings in its collection. The Wildenstein catalog identifies it under number 1713.
Reference image
Only one reference image is displayed. The file documenting the Kuboso version measures 1,319 × 1,628 px and has been preserved as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The clear gap starts from a narrow passage at the top then reaches almost the entire width in the lower half. The dark lateral masses frame it without forming a regular edge.
Warm colors appear in mixed layers, never as pure yellow. Cold areas retain red and green touches that avoid a uniform purple.
Water lilies require thicker side touches. The reflections are constructed by descending and flexible marks. Their crossing gives the painting its spatial tension.
Documented benchmarks
The Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts retains this 1907 version; it corresponds to Wildenstein number 1713.
This oil on canvas from 1907 measures 100 × 81 cm. Its vertical format and dated signature at the bottom right distinguish it from the many other versions of the cycle.
The painting belongs to the Izumi Municipal Museum, Japan. It is among the major Western works in this collection, especially renowned for its Japanese and East Asian arts.
Between 1903 and 1908, Monet gradually concentrated his water landscapes on the only mirror in the pool. Flowers, reflections and light are now enough to build the entire space.
