The Water Lilies Basin W1715hand painted reproduction

The basin unfolds vertically like a depth without a bank. A pink light passes through the reflection of the willows, while groups of water lilies form increasingly close levels. The painting brings together the real water, floating vegetation and inverted landscape in a single vibrant surface.

Look at the work

Islets of water lilies suspended between the pink of the sky and the shadow of the willows

The upper part is dense and dark, then a large luminous opening reaches the center and lower left. The leaves are divided into arcs and interrupted bands. Those in the foreground appear larger, but the depth comes mainly from the overlap of reflections.

The pale vermilion pink reported by the Artizon Museum dialogues with purples, blues and dark greens. The leaves receive silver and turquoise accents. Warm colors therefore never remain isolated: they are taken up and cooled throughout the water.

W1715 makes the pool a double-reading space: water lilies assert the surface, while reflected willows open a vertical depth.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A vertical canvas within the 1907 group

The Artizon Museum specifies that Monet painted fifteen vertically oriented compositions that year. This choice lowers the reflections over the entire height and distances the painting from the traditional horizontal landscape.

02

Pale vermilion as a clue to sunset

The large pink area can evoke the evening light reflected in the pool. However, it is not uniform: touches of green, purple and gray cross it, maintaining the sensation of moving water.

03

Leaves that adjust depth

Groups of water lilies cut reflections at different heights. This alternation brings the gaze back to the surface plane, then lets it plunge back into the dark masses. Reproduction must keep these intervals open.

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is displayed. The best exact public file measures 783 × 1075 px; it was kept at its native definition and re-encoded into real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A succession of plant levels

The top leaves form fine lines, the central ones a more continuous band and the bottom ones form isolated groups. Their progressive scale animates the rectangle without creating a rigid perspective.

Color02

Vermilion pink, plum purple, blue green and silver

Pink brings light, purple and green give depth. Silver accents on the leaves prevent dark areas from closing in.

Matter03

Two opposite brush directions

Water lilies are treated with lateral markings and reflections with vertical descents. The meeting of these gestures constructs the surface more surely than a drawn outline.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns the Wildenstein 1715 version of the Artizon Museum, collection of the Ishibashi Foundation.

Identification01

Artizon Museum, W1715

The Water Lilies Basin is an oil on canvas from 1907 measuring 100.6 × 73.5 cm. It is kept in Tokyo by the Ishibashi Foundation.

Together02

Fifteen vertical waterscapes

This canvas belongs to the vertical group painted in 1907. Several versions are today divided between public and private collections, each giving a different role to reflections, leaves and time.

Subject03

The basin developed in Giverny

Monet transforms his water garden into a pictorial laboratory. Here, he completely eliminates the Japanese bank and bridge in order to focus the gaze on the mirror of the water and its color changes.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Artizon Museum and Wildenstein 1715 version
  • The original vertical format of 100.6 × 73.5 cm
  • The pink clarity preserved with its gray and green passages
  • Turquoise leaves and purple reflections differentiated by their direction
