The Clouds, The Water Lilieshand painted reproduction

Over twelve and seventy-five meters, pink clouds are reflected in blue water without any horizon separating the sky from the pool. The three panels go from a dark green depth to a vast purple light, then return to more nocturnal blues.

Look at the work

The sky only appears through its reflection in the water of Giverny

The left part opens in deep greens and blues. Little by little, large lilac pink masses invade the center, as if the clouds were descending into the pool. Only a few groups of water lilies can identify the surface of the water.

The composition has neither bank nor vanishing point. Its depth arises from the superposition of gestures: short touches for the flowers, vertical trails for reflections and wider passages for the clouds. The curvature of the room extends this continuity around the visitor.

In Les Nuages, Monet succeeds in evoking the pink variations of the sky solely through their reflection: the pool becomes a monumental mirror, with no visible edge.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Les Nuages, Les Nymphéas - Claude Monet
01

Three panels designed as a single movement

Transitions of blue, green and mauve cross the junctions. Reproduction should preserve overall progression rather than treating each part as an isolated image.

02

Clouds returned to the water

The pink masses occupy the top and center but do not float in a sky. The water lilies placed in front of them confirm that it is a reflection.

03

Dark ends that envelop the light

The light center gains intensity thanks to the deep blues and greens placed on either side. Lightening evenly would suppress this breathing.

Details and visual documents

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

Pink clouds and water liliesThe central detail shows the lilac masses upside down in the blue and the small leaves which indicate the surface. The contours remain open and the colors overlap.

The Clouds in the first room of the OrangeryThe panoramic photograph shows the three panels on the curved wall. The door, the chair and the neighboring composition make the monumental scale perceptible.

The reference scan was reduced from 8,889 × 1,345 px to 8,000 × 1,210 px; the detail measures 4,200 × 1,345 px and the actual room photograph 8,000 × 2,500 px. No files have been enlarged; all three images are real WebPs.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

The INV 20100 set in three panels

The museum dates Les Nuages from 1914 -1926. Three oil panels on canvas, joined together and mounted on the wall, form a set of 200 × 1,275 cm.

Location02

Room 1, north wall of the Orangery

The notice precisely locates the work in the first room of the Water Lilies, on the north wall. The room photograph shows its curvature and its relationship with the neighboring passage.

Pattern03

Lessons from the sky observed with Eugène Boudin

The Orangery links this composition to Monet's lifelong attention to atmospheric effects. Here, sky variations are represented only in the stagnant water of the basin.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact INV 20100 set in three panels
  • The monumental ratio of 200 × 1,275 cm
  • Clouds understood as reflections in the basin
  • The bright pink center framed by blue-green depths
