The olive grove in the heat of Provence

A row of gnarled olive trees runs through the middle of the canvas. The gray-blue trunks divide into expressive curves, while the foliage forms a dense frieze in front of the dark trees in the background.

The yellow, pink and green terrain is crisscrossed with oblique touches that follow its undulations. In the sky, tighter blue and white markings establish vibrant light rather than classic atmospheric depth.

Installed in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum since May 1889, Van Gogh went out to paint when his condition permitted. He wrote to his mother that he never tires of the gray and silver leaves of the olive trees or the blue sky that dominates them.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Kroeller-Müller Museum identifies this large painting by the inventory KM 104.278 and the date July 1889; catalogs raisonnés list it under F585/JH1758.

Heat without visible sun

No solar disk appears. The sensation of heat arises from the agitated sky, the pale ground and the touches that make the entire pictorial field quiver.

Two brush rhythms

Van Gogh uses long lines for trunks, branches and contours, then short, curved touches for leaves, terrain and sky.

Trunks like gestures

Olive trees are not repeated silhouettes: each trunk bends, branches and anchors differently, giving the row an almost lively presence.
