À propos de l’œuvre

Oliveraie, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June, resumed in September 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Olives, F715Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Blue-black trunks twist in an olive grove bathed in pale green light, punctuated with red poppies. Van Gogh began this painting in June then added a second campaign of small touches in September, superimposing summer observation and more stylized research.

Look at the work

An olive grove painted in two moments

In the center, several gnarled trunks draw dark arabesques enhanced with orange. Their green and blue crowns meet in the upper half until they make the edge of the sky almost invisible.

The light ground is crisscrossed with large blue touches which indicate shadows that were once more purple. The path curves to the left, the erect grass and the red poppies open the depth between the trees.

The canvas combines two languages: large gestures follow the trees and the terrain, then small touches added later make the whole thing sparkle without erasing the first structure.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Nelson-Atkins Museum preserves Oliviers under inventory 32-2. The canvas measures 73 × 92.1 cm and bears F715/JH1759.

01

Two visible painting campaigns

The museum's technical study distinguishes a first execution in June and additions in September. The small, shorter touches are superimposed on the fluid network of trunks and soil.

02

Shadows transformed by fading

The areas that are now blue or almost white contained a fragile red pigment. They formed purple shadows complementary to the orange-yellow of the trunks.

03

The dough retains a trace of the work

Canvas prints in the impasto indicate that the paint was rolled or stacked before being completely dry, probably between its two phases of execution.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Oliviers F715/JH1759 was started in June and taken over in September 1889. The Nelson-Atkins Museum retains it under number 32-2.

Letter

Purple shadows on the sunny sand

Van Gogh described to his sister an olive grove with gray leaves, with purple shadows on sunburned ground. The museum's research brings this passage closer to F715.

Discovery

A fragment of grasshopper in the painting

While examining the impasto, restorers found the remains of a small grasshopper. The insect was probably already dead when caught in the fresh color painted outside.

Collection

Inventory 32-2 in Kansas City

The painting was purchased through the William Rockhill Nelson Trust. It is today exhibited in the European collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the blue-black trunks enhanced with orange, the blue shadows, the dense greens, the clear path and the red punctuations of the poppies.

  • The dark arabesques of the central trunks
  • The blue shadows that were once purple
  • The clear path that enters from the left
  • The little red touches scattered throughout the olive grove
