Olive grove in Saint-RémyReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Olive trees with purple trunks unfold on red soil crossed by cobalt blue. Above, the yellow-green sky retains surprisingly intense red clouds: the museum's analyzes today explain this exceptionally well-preserved color.
Look at the work
A purple orchard under a yellow-green sky
Trees fill the lower half of the canvas. Their gnarled trunks, painted dark purple and red-brown, alternate with olive green, gray blue and mauve crowns where small orange touches signal olives and light.
The ground is constructed by long red, blue, yellow and brown bands that go around each tree base. The sky tilts towards yellow then sea green, with red and blue clouds left in discontinuous touches.
The power of this version lies in the opposition between three zones: the bright sky, the dark foliage and a red ground covered with bright blue shadows.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Göteborg Museum preserves this olive grove under GKM 0590. Painted in November 1889, it is cataloged F586/JH1854.
A viridian green sky base
Pigment analysis identified viridian as the background color of the sky. The yellows and reds were placed on top, which explains the water green passages still visible between the keys.
A particularly stable red lacquer
The museum's research detected alizarin in the red organic dye. Its relative stability contributes to the remarkable conservation of clouds and red accents.
Blue draws the shadows on the ground
Cobalt bands do not represent water. They follow the hollows and shadows of the earth, opposing intense freshness to red browns and purple roots.
