À propos de l’œuvre

Oliviers, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Olive grove, F585Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Under a blue sky covered with clouds, olive trees twist their gray trunks above a floor heated with yellow. Van Gogh does not describe an isolated tree: he transforms the entire olive grove into a network of curves, brief touches and continuous contours.

Look at the work

An olive grove crossed by the heat

A large gnarled trunk occupies the center, surrounded by smaller trees which gradually close the view. The branches undulate horizontally and bear gray-green foliage, laid in small, tight touches.

The yellow and ocher soil is streaked with blue, purple and green. Above, white and turquoise clouds repeat the round shape of the crowns, while a few dark trunks give depth to the grove.

The olive trees become a living architecture: their trunks outline the framework of the painting and their foliage diffuse light over the entire surface.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves this Olive Grove under the inventory KM 104.278. The canvas measures 72.4 × 91.9 cm and bears F585/JH1758.

01

Keys adapted to each material

The museum distinguishes the long lines used for the trunks, branches and contours, from the small curved touches reserved for the ground, the leaves and the sky.

02

Silver grays cool the yellow

The crowns are not uniform green. Grays, blues and whites give them the silvery appearance specific to olive leaves seen under light.

03

The heat remains visible in the paint

The yellow of the ground rises around the trunks and mixes with the colored shadows. The cooler blue sky accentuates the impression of a burning afternoon by contrast.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Olive grove F585/JH1758 was painted in July 1889 in Saint-Rémy. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 104.278.

Pattern

A subject taken up during his stay

Van Gogh painted olive trees at several times during his year in Saint-Rémy. Their changing silhouettes allowed him to study drawing, light and movement at the same time.

Look

Trees close to tadpole willows

The museum notes that their stocky trunks and gnarled branches are reminiscent of the tadpole willows that Van Gogh had studied earlier in the Netherlands.

Collection

KM 104.278 in Otterlo

The painting belongs to the important Van Gogh ensemble assembled by Helene Kroeller-Müller and presented today at the Otterlo Museum.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must restore the gnarled trunks, the silver-gray foliage, the yellow ground crossed by colored shadows and the continuity of the curves even in the sky.

  • The large gray trunk placed in the center
  • The little curved touches of the foliage
  • Blue and purple accents in the yellow floor
  • The turquoise and white clouds behind the trees
