À propos de l’œuvre

Autoportrait de Vincent van Gogh, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April -June 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait, F380Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh represents himself in a light jacket, his face turned three-quarters and his gaze fixed on the mirror; the muffled blues and greens of the background are animated by a multitude of quick touches.

Look at the work

The painter facing his own gaze

The bust fills almost the entire little box. The high forehead, red beard and clear line of the collar lead towards the eyes, placed with more precision than the garment.

Around the face, the blue-green background is not a still surface: brief touches follow several directions and give the portrait a movement that contrasts with the concentrated expression.

In Paris, Van Gogh wanted to become a portrait painter but had little money to pay for models. He therefore multiplied self-portraits, at the same time color exercises, character studies and demonstrations of his know-how.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The 32.4 × 24 cm format, cardboard support and KM 105.833 inventory identify the self-portrait F380/JH1225, painted between April and June 1887.

01

A palette still retained

Blue, green and gray dominate, but pink, orange and red accents warm the face and beard. The contrast announces the freer color of the following months.

02

A dynamic background

Quick strokes do not describe any decor. They circulate the air around the head and give the small image an intensity greater than its format.

03

More than a resemblance

Van Gogh is not looking for a photographic rendering. The fragmented modeling and direction of the keys transmit a mental presence as much as a physiognomy.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The image corresponds to Van Gogh's only self-portrait kept in the collection of the Kroeller-Müller Museum.

Catalog

F380 and JH1225

These references eliminate confusion with other Parisian self-portraits very close in date, framing and outfit.

Context

A model always available

Unable to regularly pay models, Van Gogh uses his own face to work on skin tones and expression.

Support

Painted on cardboard

The rigid support and small format are suitable for quick study; the material nevertheless remains dense and fully pictorial.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the tension of the gaze, the pink-green transitions of the face and the diversity of the touches of the background without hardening the contours.

  • Green eyes directed towards the viewer
  • The red beard built by hatching
  • The lit forehead
  • The blue and red bow of the collar
  • The blue-green background with quick touches
