Verger en fleurs, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April 1889 · Arles

Orchard in bloom, F511Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Plum trees with blue-purple trunks unfold on a carpet of green grass, their white and pink flowers almost confused with the clear sky. A low wall, a red roof and small figures give the scale of this Provençal orchard.

Look at the work

A dense flowering where branches, flowers and sky respond to each other

The first row of trees forms a dark arabesque that runs the full width. Each trunk is divided into fine branches, covered with small touches of cream, pink, pale blue and yellow.

The ground is organized in green and blue bands which rise towards the low wall. On the right, two figures are inserted between the trees, while a white cloud and a smoking roof animate the horizon line.

Orchard in Flowers F511/JH1386 is an oil on canvas of 73.2 × 93.1 cm dated April 1889 in Arles. Preserved at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0038V1962, the canvas represents a plum orchard.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition combines a very defined framework and a surface almost entirely fragmented by the touch. Dark trunks give structure; flowers, grass and sky create vibration.

01

The blue-purple trunks organize the depth

The first tree stands out clearly, then the silhouettes diminish towards the bottom. Repeated curves construct perspective without resorting to long straight lines.

02

The flowers are never laid in uniform white

Cream, pink, yellow, blue and small reserves of canvas differentiate the bouquets. This variety allows flowering to remain readable in front of the clear sky.

03

The ground contrasts vertical touches with sinuous branches

The grass in the foreground is painted in short, erect lines. Their tight rhythm stabilizes the freer network of branches above.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F511/JH1386, inventory s0038V1962 and dimensions 73.2 × 93.1 cm identify this plum orchard preserved in Amsterdam.

Pattern

Van Gogh clarifies that these are plum trees

Around Arles, he painted several species of fruit trees in flower: apricot trees, almond trees, apple trees, peach trees and, in this canvas, plum trees.

Resumption

He took the painting to Saint-Rémy and reworked it from memory

Dissatisfied with the first state, Van Gogh takes the work away from the motif. He then explains that he found a better way to express the harmony of tones.

Provenance

The painting joined Theo at the end of September 1889

The history of the museum indicates that Van Gogh sent him from Saint-Rémy to his brother. She then remained with the family before joining the Vincent van Gogh Foundation.
