À propos de l’œuvre

Tête de femme, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · March-April 1885 · Nuenen

Profile of woman with dark headdress, F153Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A peasant woman seen in a straight profile wears a headdress that absorbs almost all the light. Her green-brown face is drawn by thick blue lines, then a few pink touches on the ear and chin animate her in front of the pale blue background.

Look at the work

The headdress, face and background read like three nested shapes

The large black mass of the cap fills the upper left corner and follows the back of the head to the nape of the neck. Inside this silhouette, the face is reduced to a brown plane whose profile is clearly cut out.

The light background surrounds the nose, lips and chin, then descends behind a surprisingly luminous neck. This recessed neck makes the head appear projected forward.

Profile of a woman with a dark headdress F153/JH587 is a 25.1 × 19 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in March-April 1885. It belongs to the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 107.308.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This small study shows how Van Gogh made darkness a color. Prussian blue, green, brown and pink organize values without depending on uniform black.

01

The profile is almost calligraphed to Prussian blue

A thick line follows the forehead, nose, mouth and jaw. It quickly defines the pattern and creates a cold contrast with brown skin.

02

Face remains flat but is never inert

The green, brown and pink passages change on the cheek, ear and chin. Their juxtaposition gives movement to a deliberately poorly modeled shape.

03

The light neck produces unexpected depth

Because it appears to be placed too far behind the cheek, the head advances visually. This shift in construction becomes an expressive element of the portrait.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F153/JH587, KM 107.308 and the dimensions of 25.1 × 19 cm distinguish this profile from the other heads of women kept at the same museum.

Palette

Dark areas contain blue, green and brown

The museum points out Prussian blue in the outlines, several browns in the skin and a mixture of green and brown in the jacket and headdress.

Accent

Pink is limited to the ear and chin

These two warm accents are enough to draw the eye to the head. They show that the dark scale is constructed by precise colored relationships.

Speed

The study appears to have been asked without lengthy repetitions

The shapes remain direct and certain proportions are not corrected. This rapid execution retains the character of a concentrated exercise.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must restore the enveloping shape of the cap, the Prussian blue profile, the greens of the cheek, the pink ear, the light neck and the irregular blue-green background.

  • The massive curve of the black cap
  • The blue outline that goes down from the forehead to the chin
  • Ear marked with discreet pink
  • The cheek modeled in green brown
  • The light neck placed behind the jaw
