From a terrain covered with brambles, grasses and young trees, Monet opens a view towards a calm sea under a large blue-gray sky. The coast remains almost invisible: it is the foliage, the changes in terrain and the horizon line which organize the landscape. Painted around 1864, this canvas further combines the tonal solidity of Barbizon with an already lighter palette.

Look at the work

The sea appears as a clearing beyond an entirely vegetal foreground

The tallest trees are grouped on the left, where they form a dark, vertical mass. Their foliage extends towards the center by lower bushes, allowing a strip of blue-green sea to open. On the right, the brown and green terrain descends gently towards this opening.

The sky occupies more than half of the canvas. Monet superimposes muffled blues, grays and cream clouds with little marked edges. This aerial scale contrasts with the dense network of touches in the foreground, where leaves, brambles and grasses mingle without systematic outline.

The subject is not just the coast: it is the passage of a dense plant screen towards the sea and the sky, two open surfaces where light can unfold.

The museum describes an evolution from the dark tone of the Barbizon School to lighter colors and a freer touch. Deep greens remain present, but blue air is already gaining a dominant place.

An abbreviated signature characteristic of the period

Monet signs C. Monet in the lower right corner. The museum catalog notes that this abbreviated form appears in his early paintings, before his full name was used more frequently after 1865.

The trees on the left are darker and more vertical, the central bushes lighter, the nearby grasses more varied. Treating them with the same green would flatten the entire land.

Its slightly gray blue-green separates the foliage from the horizon. Too saturated a color would overly attract the eye and destroy the calm balance of the painting.

The sky consists of melted passages and visible touches

The large blues are supple, but the clouds receive firmer cream and gray accents. This alternation maintains a stable atmosphere without making the sky still.

A work among the very first known landscapes

The Van Gogh Museum catalog places the painting around 1864, within a still small group of early works. The place is probably close to Honfleur, frequented by Monet during these years.

Influences02

Between Barbizon, Boudin and Jongkind

The density of the vegetation recalls the tradition of Fontainebleau, while the maritime openness and the clearer sky refer to the lessons of Boudin and Jongkind. Monet brings together these experiences here without yet adopting his impressionist touch of the 1870s.

Acquired by the Van Gogh Museum in 1996

The museum is purchasing the work with the support of the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, the Vereniging Rembrandt and other partners. It bears inventory s0461S1996.
