The Palazzo Contarini fills almost the entire frame. Monet cuts the floors, brings the Renaissance facade closer together and transforms it into a surface of ocher, green, purple and blue. At the bottom of the canvas, the Grand Canal no longer reflects the palace like a mirror: a few dark areas and moving lines are enough to extend the architecture into the water.
Look at the work
Front framing eliminates almost any side view. Windows, arches and pilasters align in strips, but their design dissolves in light. Three brown pali rise from the water and connect the two main areas of the composition.
Greens and purples dominate a deliberately unusual palette. They move from stone to canal, then mingle with warm browns in the posts. The precision of the ornament remains perceptible from afar, while the free touch appears as soon as one approaches.
The palace is recognizable, but Monet tilts it towards a tapestry of light where stone and water share the same color.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Among the thirty-seven compositions made in Venice, eleven show palaces at close range. Monet devotes two versions to the Palazzo Contarini: this horizontal canvas W1766 and another vertical, W1767, kept at the Kunstmuseum in St. Gallen.
Monet and Alice first stay with American patron Mary Young Hunter at Palazzo Barbaro. From this Grand Canal residence, the painter can frame the Contarini facade almost from the front and observe the exchanges of color between polychrome stone and water.
The Museum Barberini indicates that the canvas was started on the motif, then carefully reworked in the workshop after Monet's return. Atmospheric freedom is therefore based on precise construction and not on summary execution.

The single reference image measures 2,200 × 1,730 px. It corresponds to the MB-Mon-31 version of the Museum Barberini and has been preserved as a real WebP at its available definition, without artificial enlargement.
The top and sides disappear. This cut gives the facade an almost abstract presence and focuses attention on the horizontal rhythms, windows and three vertical posts.
The range does not imitate the local color of each stone. It restores a diffuse light where the hues become contaminated. The sustained browns of the pali serve as anchor points in the middle of this vibration.
Architectural patterns remain readable through repetitions and values, not continuous contours. For faithful reproduction, each key must participate in the structure while maintaining its autonomy.
Documented benchmarks
This information relates to the horizontal version of the Museum Barberini, MB-Mon-31 inventory and Wildenstein 1766 catalog.
The oil on canvas measures 73 × 92 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 1908" at the bottom left and belongs to the Hasso Plattner collection.
The painting appeared under number 127 in the exhibition Claude Monet: Venice, open in Paris from May 28 to June 8, 1912, where reworked views of the Venetian countryside were brought together.
Bernheim-Jeune and Durand-Ruel purchased the work directly from the artist. Adolph Lewisohn acquired it in 1917, before its passage through several collections and then its entry into the Hasso Plattner collection.
