The Ducal Palace stands on the edge of the lagoon in yellow, pink and blue light. Its facade remains more precise than the neighboring buildings, already absorbed by the mist. On the right, the mooring posts lead the eye towards the palace while the campanile of Saint-Marc can be seen above the roofs.
Look at the work
The palace occupies the center left and stretches almost to the middle of the canvas. The lagoon opens the foreground, crossed by horizontal reflections and by the dark verticals of the pali. Their reduction towards the bottom reinforces the depth without resorting to a rigid perspective.
The light stone receives yellows and roses, while the arcades and shadows become charged with purple-blue. On the right, the facades and the campanile lose their contours in colder air. This gradual transition from precise to diffuse gives the painting its rhythm.
W1770 never separates the monument from the atmosphere: the facade seems solid at first glance, then its colors extend into the water and mist.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet places the palace in direct contact with water and lets the perspective of the buildings follow the shore to the right. The framing thus associates an immediately recognizable monument with a long atmospheric leak.
The Museum Barberini highlights the role of the mooring posts placed on the right. Their dark verticals and decreasing spacing give measure to the channel and prevent the mist from flattening the entire scene.
The notice brings the color passages closer to Monet's admiration for Turner. The yellows, pinks and blues do not fill closed areas: they slide from the facade towards the sky and the water.
Reference image
The single reference image measures 2,400 × 1,573 px. The official Museum Barberini file remains at its native definition and has been converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The central facade retains its arcades and essential divisions. As the gaze moves to the right, the shapes become lighter. This gradation must remain noticeable in reproduction.
Warm colors give the palate its presence; blues cool shadows and distances. A few purples ensure the transition without creating black contrasts.
The marks are tighter in the facades and wider in the lagoon. The reflections remain fragmented, while the pali require firm but colorful vertical accents.

This oil on canvas from 1908 measures 57 × 92 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 1908" at the bottom left.
The work belongs to the Hasso Plattner collection presented at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, which preserves a major collection of impressionist paintings.
During his stay in 1908, Monet worked on thirty-seven views of Venice. He then took up the paintings in Giverny before their Parisian presentation in 1912.
