The ducal palace and the campanile of St. Mark stand out in orange light, seen from San Giorgio Maggiore. The city forms a luminous band above a blue-purple lagoon. As the gaze approaches the foreground, the reflections become freer and the facade seems to lose its weight.
Look at the work
The more elongated format of this version stretches the Riva degli Schiavoni to the right. The palace is located slightly to the left of the center and the campanile stands behind it. The urban line remains low, which leaves a vast space for clear skies and especially for water which advances to the lower edge.
The facade receives creamy yellows, pale oranges and pinks, while the lagoon accumulates blues, purples and some warm echoes. The shapes of the city are still discernible, but their reflection is broken down into colorful bands which abolish any fixed limit between architecture and atmosphere.
In W1756, the lengthening of the format amplifies the distance: the city becomes a horizon of light and the lagoon the true pictorial space.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Guggenheim's canvas measures 65.4 × 100.6 cm, a width significantly greater than that of W1755 at the Metropolitan Museum. This report modifies the reading of the Riva and gives more horizontal momentum to the sky, the city and the reflections.
The work is numbered 91.3910 and belongs to the Thannhauser collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. It was bequeathed by Hilde Thannhauser in 1991. Monet's catalog raisonné recorded it under the number Wildenstein 1756.
The oranges and roses of the city are intensified by the blues and purples of the lagoon. A faithful reproduction should not neutralize these oppositions: they give the palace its luminosity while maintaining the depth of the pool.

The Riva extends the palace to the right and avoids an overly marked center. The campanile creates a thin vertical in the middle of this essentially horizontal construction.

In the distance, the gesture remains tight in order to suggest the buildings. In the foreground, the marks lengthen and thicken, giving the lagoon a material presence.

The painting joins the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation through the legacy of Hilde Thannhauser. Its number 91.3910 and its particular width make it not to be confused with the versions of the Met or the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Monet painted in front of the motif during his stay in 1908, but kept the paintings for several years in his studio. He reworked them before the 1912 exhibition, reinforcing the colorful chords which gave the whole its unity.
