Claude Monet · 1908 · Washington 1963.10.182 · W1764
Palazzo da Mula in Venice W1764hand painted reproduction
The facade of Palazzo da Mula fills almost the entire canvas, cut only by a strip of canal and a few gondolas. Monet transforms the Gothic palace into a screen of topaz, lapis, sky blue and mauve. The windows remain recognizable, but the stone seems to be crossed by the humidity of Venice.

Look at the work
A Venetian facade brought together until it became a surface of light and reflections
The framing removes the sky and places the viewer facing the palace. Two rows of ogival bays organize the facade; at water level, dark openings and gondolas give scale. The canal line occupies the lower third and receives the bluish green reflection of the building.
Architectural details are never traced uniformly. A deep blue specifies certain arches, while pink-mauve and purple open up the shadows. In the water, the keys become short and horizontal, then mingle with emerald accents that make the facade waver.
By removing almost the entire sky, Monet forces the gaze to follow the passage of light between the stone, the windows and the canal.
Composition, touch and light
What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
01
A palace seen up close from the Grand Canal
The Palazzo da Mula was located opposite the Palazzo Barbaro where Monet stayed in 1908. This proximity explains the tight frontal framing: the architecture is not a distant element of panorama, but the entire motif.
02
The Gothic facade ordered by the windows
The ogival berries form a regular rhythm, but each opening receives a slightly different color and sharpness. This variation prevents decorative repetition and restores the shimmer of the air.
03
The canal as a colorful extension of the palace
The emerald green, blue and purple of the water take on the tones of the facade in a more mobile order. Reproduction must make this link felt without transforming the reflection into a symmetrical copy of the building.
Reference image
Read this specific version
The single reference image measures 3,200 × 2,430 px. The National Gallery of Art open file has been reduced from 4,000 px wide and converted into a real WebP, without any enlargement.
Composition01
Two-thirds architecture, one-third water
This distribution gives the palace immediate monumentality. The gondolas and openings on the ground floor create a dark transition that prevents the facade from appearing to sit on the canal.
Color02
Topaz, lapis, mauve and emerald green
The official palette described by the National Gallery is almost entirely cold. Topaz accents warm up certain stones and bring out blue shadows without producing a stark contrast.
Matter03
A cobalt signature in the material
Monet signs and dates the canvas in cobalt blue at the bottom left. The touch remains visible everywhere: tighter in the ornaments, freer and horizontal in the water.
