The facade of Palazzo Dario fills almost the entire canvas, cut at the top and sides as if in a photographic frame. Its windows, marble oculi and balconies dissolve into blues, pinks and greens. A dark gondola runs along the palace and separates the architecture from its reflection: the water becomes the moving second half of the building.

Look at the work

A closely cropped Venetian facade, extended by its blue and mauve reflection

The palace is seen frontally but it is never perfectly stable. The openings overlap, the circular patterns drift slightly and the upper part exits the frame. On the right, a light strip suggests the neighboring space without looking away from the main facade.

The gondola draws a horizontal line at the foot of the building. Beneath it, the blues, greens and purples take the shapes of the windows, lengthening them. Reflections do not reproduce architecture: they transform it into vibration.

The Dario Palace is not placed in front of the water; in Monet, his stone and his reflection constitute a single luminous surface.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The third motive of the afternoon

Museum Wales says Monet probably worked on this view between two and four hours, during his "third motif". Several sessions allowed him to find comparable light while developing the material.

A framing indebted to Japanese prints

The upper floor and part of the neighboring Palazzo Barbaro-Wolkoff are cut by the edges of the canvas. This device, brought together by the Japanese Prints Museum, gives the image the immediacy of a chosen fragment.

The gondola as a dividing line

Placed in contact with the palace and the water, the boat separates the built shapes from their reflections. Its black silhouette structures the composition without interrupting the continuous passage of colors.

A cut but perfectly recognizable facade

Gothic windows, oculi and balconies must maintain their organization. Tight cropping is part of the work and should not be compensated for by adding space around the palace.

Color02

Lilac blue, pale pink and sea green

Cold colors dominate, but pinks and yellows warm the stone. The contrasts remain diffuse so that the architecture seems crossed by Venetian light.

Matter03

A freer touch in the channel

The facade uses small, repeated marks for its windows and ornaments. In the water, the gestures become horizontal and flexible, which distinguishes mineral material and reflection.

Acquisition02

Purchased by Margaret Davies in 1913

Margaret Davies acquired the painting in Paris a year after the Venice View Exhibition. The work entered the Welsh national collections with its bequest of December 12, 1963.

Composition03

The palace and its neighbor deliberately truncated

The museum notice specifies that the upper floor of Palazzo Dario and the left half of Palazzo Barbaro-Wolkoff go out of the frame. This choice gives the pattern an unusual proximity.
