The facade of the Doge's Palace extends above a lagoon crossed by yellows, blues and purples. Monet does not describe every Gothic arch: he makes the stone, the galleries and their reflection vibrate under a moving light. The monument becomes a balance of colored masses rather than an architectural survey.
Look at the work
The facade occupies almost the entire width and is placed slightly above the center. The large light mass is held between the purple shadow on the left side and the lower building which extends the bank to the right. In front of it, the water opens a vast foreground where yellow reflections lead the eye towards the arcades.
The light does not come from a uniform white. Lemon yellows, pinks, cobalt blues and purples juxtapose on the stone and water. The two rows of arcades remain recognizable, but their contours dissolve in short touches that give the palate an almost floating presence.
In W1743, architecture provides the measure; the real material of the painting is the colorful atmosphere that unites stone, sky and water.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Brooklyn Museum indicates that Monet worked from a gondola placed in the Grand Canal, halfway between the Doge's Palace and San Giorgio Maggiore. This very low level gives the lagoon an unusual scale and places the facade almost head-on in front of the viewer.
The arcades on the ground floor form a dark and regular suite. Above, the gallery becomes a thinner strip, then the large light wall is punctuated with windows. A faithful reproduction must preserve these three registers without transforming the work into a precise architectural drawing.
Monet began his views on site in 1908, then resumed them in his studio before the Parisian exhibition of 1912. The successive layers densify the color relationships: the impression of the moment is based on a long and very controlled construction.
Reference image
The only reference image comes from the Brooklyn Museum's high definition file. It was reduced from 5,501 to 3,200 px wide and converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The palace forms an almost continuous rectangle, but the lateral shadows, the offset of the roof and the extension on the right prevent any rigidity. The lagoon takes up enough space to breathe this architectural mass.
The warm tones of the stone return to the central reflection. Blues and purples cool the shadows as well as the edges of the water, creating depth without the need for a uniform brown.
The brush strokes tighten on the windows and battlements, then lengthen horizontally in the lagoon. This difference in rhythm maintains the distinction between the facade and its reflection.
Documented benchmarks
This information concerns precisely the painting of the Brooklyn Museum, accession 20.634 and Wildenstein catalog 1743.
This oil on canvas from 1908 measures 81.3 × 99.1 cm. Monet signed and dated it lower right. Its format and framing distinguish it from other views of the ducal palace painted during the same stay.
The Brooklyn Museum received the painting in 1920 thanks to a donation from A. Augustus Healy. The work is today one of the emblematic paintings in its European collection.
The museum notice reminds us that Monet deliberately attenuates the detail of the monument to favor light and water. The palace remains identifiable, but above all becomes the support for an atmospheric effect.
