The Gothic facade of Palazzo da Mula fills almost the entire field, as if Monet had brought the palace closer together until he transformed his windows into colorful rhythms. The blue of the building slides into the canal, crossed by greens and purples. Two moored gondolas are enough to remind us that this floating architecture belongs to Venice.
Look at the work
The palace cuts the composition into two very clear registers: the stone occupies the upper two thirds and the canal forms a lower band. The ogival windows repeat without being drawn one by one. On the right, two dark gondolas are placed against the water level openings and give the scale of the building.
Monet replaces the expected white of the facade with denim blues, sky tones, lapis and some mauve accents. In the water, the brush strokes become short and horizontal; emerald greens and cold blues recompose the reflection without mechanically reproducing each window.
In W1764, the subject is not only the Palazzo da Mula: it is the luminous continuity that transforms stone into water and reflection into architecture.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The palace is seen very closely and no vast panorama surrounds it. This frontality brings out the repetitions of arches, windows and cornices. For a faithful reproduction, the facade must remain monumental without becoming rigid or perfectly symmetrical.
The National Gallery of Art notice describes a range of topaz, lapis and sky blue, punctuated with amethyst and mauve. The shadows are therefore not reduced to black: they maintain a colorful temperature which makes the volumes vibrate.
Monet signs and dates in cobalt blue in the lower left corner. This inscription visually belongs to the channel and should not be enlarged or isolated. Its discretion confirms that the entire surface is thought of as a single color field.

The only reference image comes from the National Gallery of Art public file. The 4,096 px digital original has been reduced to 3,200 px and converted to real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The ratio between the architectural mass and the strip of water gives the work its stability. The gondolas, placed near the right edge, prevent the repetition of windows from freezing the composition.
These colors flow from one register to another. Warmer tones remain rare and serve to illuminate certain stones, while blue dominates without standardizing the surface.
Brush directions separate materials. Vertical accents suggest pilasters and bays; the streaks of the canal immediately fragment their reflection and establish movement.

These landmarks exactly identify the Palazzo da Mula of the National Gallery of Art, accession 1963.10.182 and Wildenstein catalog 1764.
This oil on canvas from 1908 measures 61.4 × 80.5 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 1908" lower left and belongs to the group of Venetian views painted during Monet's only stay in the city.
After passing through Durand-Ruel and several American collections, the work entered the National Gallery of Art through the bequest of Chester Dale in 1963. It is today presented under the number 1963.10.182.
The Palazzo da Mula is located on the Grand Canal. Monet tightens his view of the facade and reduces the urban context so that the openings, blue light and reflection become the real narrative elements.
