Basket of thoughts, F244Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Yellow, purple and almost black pansies overflow from a basket placed on a tambourine-shaped stool; still life directly links Van Gogh's floral research to his life in the cafés of Montmartre.

Look at the work

A bouquet of Café du Tambourin

The basket occupies almost the entire width of the painting. Dark and light flowers intertwine without symmetry, while a few stems stand out against the blue-green background.

Under the flowers, the red and green bands are not those of a simple table: they decorate a drum stool similar to those at the Café du Tambourin, boulevard de Clichy.

Van Gogh painted many flowers in Paris in order to exercise his color and in the hope of finding buyers. This basket from May 1887 also preserves the memory of a place he frequented regularly.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum dates F244/JH1093 from May 1887. The 46 × 55 cm canvas is inventoried s0180V1962.

01

An irregular floral mass

The bouquet is not ordered in a fan shape: flowers and leaves accumulate in small groups, giving an impression of natural abundance.

02

Deafened complements

The yellows of the petals gain intensity compared to the purples and blue-green of the background, without becoming garish.

03

The tambourine as a second motif

Its red and green stripes form a brightly colored base and connect still life to the modern world of coffee.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice identifies the support as a tambourine-shaped stool, characteristic furniture of the café run by Agostina Segatori.

Location

The Tambourine Café

The establishment was located on Boulevard de Clichy. Van Gogh frequented it and also exhibited his own paintings there.

Owner

Agostina Segatori

The old Italian model ran the cafe; Van Gogh had a brief relationship with her and painted her portrait.

Series

Flowers from the Parisian period

Van Gogh multiplies floral still lifes to lighten his palette and test new color ratios.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must distinguish yellow, purple and dark pansies, preserve the strips of the stool and retain the dense touch of the basket without confusing the flowers.

  • Yellow thoughts at the top
  • Purple and black corollas
  • The wicker basket
  • The red stripes of the drum stool
  • The brushed blue-green background
