Banque de l'Oise à Auvers, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Oise shore in AuversReproduction of oil painting on canvas

On the bank of the Oise, boats wait near a landing stage while a woman fishes under the trees. Van Gogh chooses a peaceful leisure scene and transforms it with a clear palette and a network of horizontal touches.

Look at the work

A bright stopover by the river

The bank crosses the composition diagonally and separates the clear water from the vegetation. Narrow boats, seen at an angle, create several axes towards the center. A seated or leaning figure at the water's edge introduces a calm presence into this walking landscape.

The reflections do not form a smooth mirror: they are constructed in blue, green, yellow and pink bands. The trees close the background, but the clear gaps and the water surface maintain an open atmosphere. It's about from Van Gogh's only known painting devoted directly to the Oise.

The river becomes a fabric of colors where boats, reflections and foliage respond to each other without breaking the tranquility of the pattern.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Detroit canvas is distinguished by the large diagonal of the shore, its rental boats and its particularly clear palette for the last weeks of Auvers.

01

An oblique bank

The bank leads the gaze from the lower angle towards the trees. This diagonal is relayed by the hulls of the boats and prevents the scene from remaining static.

02

Water in colored bands

Short parallel touches suggest reflections without reproducing every detail. Roses and yellows warm up blues and greens.

03

A leisure landscape

The fisherwoman, the landing stage and the boats recall the relaxation activities accessible around Auvers at the end of the 19th century.

Documented benchmarks

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the diagonal of the bank, the finesse of the boats and above all the horizontal rhythm of the reflections, without making the water too uniform.

  • The precise line of the bank and landing stage
  • The silhouette of the fisherwoman under the trees
  • The long hulls of the boats seen in perspective
  • The blue, pink, yellow and green touches of the water
