Look at the work

A still life made of wear and material

The inverted shoe reveals its green and brown sole, placed almost in the center. The other ankle boot opens to the left, its wrinkled upper forming a dark mass.

The leathers are painted brown, black, green and blue. The background fabric receives visible touches that give an active surface to this very simple arrangement.

This oil on canvas measuring 32.7 × 41.3 cm was painted in Paris in 1887. It is F333/JH1236 and bears the number 1950.302 in the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh treats ankle boots like a portrait of objects. Leather folds, exposed sole, eyelets and laces make their use visible without adding a certain story about their owner.

01

The sole becomes the visual center

Its green-brown oval contrasts with the blue fabric and makes the reversal of the shoe immediately readable.

02

The laces extend the design

Their fine curves advance in the foreground and connect the two ankle boots.

03

The color exceeds brown

Blues, greens and orange touches animate a subject that Van Gogh could have treated in a purely earthy range.

Documented benchmarks
