Claude Monet · The Parisian garden in 1878 · Wildenstein 468

Parc Monceau W468hand painted reproduction

Monet looks at Parc Monceau from the shadow of very close foliage. Trunks, branches and flowering shrubs build an irregular screen through which an alley and a few elegant walkers appear. Greens, whites and roses do not only describe a garden: they restore the dazzling light fragmented by the leaves.

Look at the work

A curtain of foliage turns the walk into an apparition

Two trunks rise near the center and divide the garden into narrow passages. Around them, branches laden with leaves and flowers occupy the edges of the painting like a natural setting. The light ground of the path appears in fragments; it leads towards small silhouettes without creating too regular a perspective.

Walkers remain distant and partially hidden. Their dark or light clothing can be read as accents among the foliage. In the foreground, white and pink flowers are indicated by thick touches; at the bottom, the shapes tighten and become lighter.

The park is not seen from an open driveway, but through a screen of branches that makes every appearance valuable.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A viewpoint hidden in the vegetation

Monet places the viewer behind trunks and shrubs. This position gives the foreground an unusual density and creates several windows towards the aisle.

02

Light divided into small units

Whites, yellows and pinks do not form uniform lighting. They appear between the greens and give the impression of filtered sunlight.

03

Figures integrated into the landscape

Walkers are neither portraits nor independent subjects. Their scale and colors serve to measure depth and evoke the social life of the park.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference precisely reproduces the Wildenstein 468 version cataloged by Christie's. The file of 3,200 × 2,627 px was reduced to 3,000 × 2,463 px, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.

Composition01

A composition in successive screens

Flowering shrubs, trunks, paths and silhouettes overlap. Depth arises from these overlaps rather than a visible line of flight.

Color02

Multiplied greens

Yellow greens, emerald, olive and blue-green coexist. Touches of white, pink and orange prevent vegetation from becoming a uniform mass.

Matter03

A thicker touch in the foreground

Nearby flowers and leaves receive frank gestures. Towards the bottom, the paint tightens and the shapes blend into a clearer light.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This version of Parc Monceau, painted and signed in 1878, bears number 468 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné and measures 54.1 × 65 cm.

Together01

One of three views from 1878

Monet returned to Parc Monceau in 1878 and painted three similar compositions. This version is distinguished by its point of view taken behind very dense foliage.

Provenance02

Purchased directly from Monet

Doctor Georges de Bellio acquired the painting from the artist on June 2, 1878. Great support from the Impressionists, he brought together a major collection of their works.

Exposure03

Probably shown in 1879

The search for provenance probably associates him with number 152 of the fourth impressionist exhibition. She has since appeared in several international presentations devoted to Monet.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the screen formed by the two trunks and the branches of the foreground.
  • Differentiate between the many greens without losing the unity of the garden.
  • Maintain the small ladder and the partially hidden position of walkers.
  • Reserve the thickest light touches for flowers and sunbursts.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its abundant vegetation and pink and white flashes bring natural light to a living room, bedroom or entrance. A discreet light oak, off-white or gold setting extends the elegant atmosphere of the park.
