Look at the work

A gap of sun crosses the crowds of the park

The trees form a dense vault which opens in the center onto the sky and the clear facade of a building. The path starts from the bottom right, goes up towards the central group then narrows in the distance. The standing figures are arranged in small clusters, often separated by accents of light.

In the foreground right, several men dressed in light sit side by side, while a dark man stands near the edge. On the left, a woman in a light dress and red hat advances into a bright area. The green slope at the bottom, crossed by yellows, closes the scene with a powerful diagonal.

The driveway leads into the city, but the real architecture of the painting is made by foliage, sunspots and groups of walkers.

Dark foliage occupies the sides and top. Their central opening acts as a second frame around the facade and the illuminated figures.

Dresses, hats and suits are not individually detailed. Their whites, reds, blacks and blues alternate and measure the depth of the aisle.

An already very two-dimensional surface

The Met highlights the broad contours and leaf patterns in the strong contrasts. These passages announce the more decorative constructions that Monet would develop in the following decades.

The single reference is the public domain file of the Metropolitan Museum's 59.142 inventory. The digital original of 4,363 × 5,860 px was reduced to 2,234 × 3,000 px, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.

A vertical perspective narrowed by the trees

The format forces the walk to climb into the image. The lateral green masses accentuate this depth while leaving the foreground very close.

Color02

Greens from yellow to almost black

Sunny grasses use acidic yellows, medium foliage uses frank greens, and edges use black greens. This amplitude creates lighting even before the figures.

Matter03

Fragmented touches in the crowd

Faces, clothes and cast shadows are posed in small separate accents. From a distance, they form a precise social scene without academic drawing.

This vertical oil on canvas measuring 72.7 × 54.3 cm is kept at the Metropolitan Museum under number 59.142 and identified as Wildenstein 466.

Series01

Six views of Parc Monceau

Monet painted three paintings of the park in the spring of 1876 then three others in 1878. This vertical version brings the viewer closer to walkers and organizes the alley like an urban scene.

Location02

An English garden in the heart of modern Paris

Created at the end of the 18th century and then redeveloped, the park is surrounded by private mansions. In 1878, Monet lived not far away on Edinburgh Street.

Provenance03

Returned to the Lindon family in 1946

Seized in Paris in 1940 in the collection of Alfred Lindon, the painting was returned to his family after the war. The Metropolitan Museum acquired it in 1959.
