Parliament, sunset W1598hand painted reproduction

In London, Parliament becomes a midnight blue silhouette in front of a sky of peach, pink and lavender. The Victoria Tower and the Clock Tower emerge from the mist while the Thames collects their colors. This painting signed and dated 1903 is the Wildenstein 1598 version of the National Gallery of Art.

Look at the work

Westminster cut against an iridescent sunset

The buildings are not described stone by stone. A long indigo mass connects the two towers, the profiles of which are sufficient to identify Westminster. Around this condensed architecture, the mist softens the limits and makes the purple of the sky vibrate.

The sunset unfolds in flexible bands: peach near the horizon, pink in the center, then washed blue higher up. Their contrast with the very dark Parliament gives the monument a monumental presence without resorting to the precision of the drawing.

In W1598, light does not rest on the monument: it envelops it until it transforms London into an apparition.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Washington's exact version

The National Gallery of Art keeps this oil on canvas under inventory 1963.10.48. Its dimensions of 81.3 × 92.5 cm, its dated signature and the Wildenstein number 1598 allow it to be identified without confusion.

02

A series designed from the Savoy

Monet observes Westminster from his room at the Savoy Hotel on the other bank. He found the motif at different times, then resumed his paintings in Giverny before the 1904 London exhibition at Durand-Ruel.

03

Fog as pictorial material

Opaque passages and thinner sails don't just describe weather. They regulate the distance between the towers, the sky and the river, giving fog a role as concrete as that of architecture.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the complete and exact view of W1598, preserved as a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,650 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Two towers, one silhouette

The Victoria Tower on the left and the Clock Tower on the right structure the horizon. Their profiles must remain sharp just long enough to be recognized and then dissolve into the mist.

Color02

Indigo, peach, rose and lavender

Pastel tones are never uniform. Warm touches run through the blues and cold grays moderate the pinks, which maintains the humid evening atmosphere.

Matter03

Horizontal and melted touches

The layers of the sky follow a horizontal direction but their edges remain irregular. On the monument, a denser paste fixes the darkest accents.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The notice from the National Gallery of Art documents this painting signed and dated 1903, inventory 1963.10.48, identified Wildenstein 1598.

Identification01

Parliament, sunset, W1598

The work is an oil on canvas measuring 81.3 × 92.5 cm. Monet wrote "Claude Monet 1903" at the bottom right, an indication directly noted by the museum.

Collection02

National Gallery of Art, 1963.10.48

The painting belongs to the Washington collection thanks to the bequest of Ailsa Mellon Bruce in 1969. Its inventory number is the institutional benchmark for this version.

Series03

The Parliaments of London

Monet painted the motif during his stays in London from 1899 to 1901 and then completed several paintings in Giverny. Variations in fog, time and color are the real subject of the series.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Washington version W1598, inventory 1963.10.48
  • The original format of 81.3 × 92.5 cm and its almost square balance
  • The indigo silhouette of the towers in front of the peach and lavender sky
  • The depth of shadows without uniform black or too hard contours

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This harmony of indigo, powder pink and peach brings calm light without losing its architectural force. It goes well with a contemporary living room, an office or a bedroom with natural materials and patinated metals.
