Claude Monet · 1903 · Washington 1963.10.48 · W1598

Parliament, sunset W1598hand painted reproduction

The gaze starts from the small olive green boat, glides over the pink reflections of the Thames then joins the dark mass of Westminster. Monet organizes this 1903 version as a rise of color towards light. Preserved in Washington under number 1963.10.48, it corresponds to Wildenstein 1598.

Look at the work

A luminous Thames facing the silhouette of Parliament

The lower half is built by wide horizontal passages. Salmon pink, lilac blue and pale yellow respond to each other without forming an exact mirror. The boat placed slightly to the left introduces the unique human presence into this mobile expanse.

Above the water, Parliament is reduced to a continuous silhouette, interrupted by the two towers. The pastel sky takes on the colors of the river in a calmer order. This chromatic circulation unites the three zones of the composition.

The little boat gives scale; all around, water, fog and architecture become colorful values.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Washington's exact version

The National Gallery of Art keeps this oil on canvas under inventory 1963.10.48. Its dimensions of 81.3 × 92.5 cm, its dated signature and the Wildenstein number 1598 allow it to be identified without confusion.

02

The view from the Savoy Hotel

From the Savoy Hotel, Monet looks southwest. The opposite bank places the Houses of Parliament against the light, an essential condition for obtaining the dark mass and stretched reflections of this composition.

03

A backlight constructed by color

Parliament is not black: it combines deep blue, purple and muffled green. Opposite, the roses and yellows of the sunset gain intensity. Reproduction must preserve this opposition without blocking the shadows.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the complete and exact view of W1598, preserved as a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,650 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A boat in the foreground

The small olive accent placed in the water avoids too perfect symmetry. Its size and position are essential to making the depth of the Thames.

Color02

Indigo, peach, rose and lavender

Warm reflections are interrupted by blue-purple lines. This alternation produces the flickering of the water and prevents the sunset from becoming a simple orange layer.

Matter03

Horizontal and melted touches

The Thames requires visible and stretched touches; the sky receives more melted transitions. The change in bill distinguishes moving water from misty air.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The notice from the National Gallery of Art documents this painting signed and dated 1903, inventory 1963.10.48, identified Wildenstein 1598.

Identification01

Parliament, sunset, W1598

The work is an oil on canvas measuring 81.3 × 92.5 cm. Monet wrote "Claude Monet 1903" at the bottom right, an indication directly noted by the museum.

Collection02

National Gallery of Art, 1963.10.48

The painting belongs to the Washington collection thanks to the bequest of Ailsa Mellon Bruce in 1969. Its inventory number is the institutional benchmark for this version.

Series03

The Parliaments of London

Monet painted the motif during his stays in London from 1899 to 1901 and then completed several paintings in Giverny. Variations in fog, time and color are the real subject of the series.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Washington version W1598, inventory 1963.10.48
  • The original format of 81.3 × 92.5 cm and its almost square balance
  • The small olive boat and the horizontal reflections of the Thames
  • The depth of shadows without uniform black or too hard contours
