Two young women stand on the edge of a grass-covered cliff, their dresses and parasols caught in the same wind as the sea and vegetation. Signed and dated Claude Monet 82 lower right, this oil on canvas measuring 66.5 × 82.3 cm is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under number 1933.443 and corresponds to Wildenstein 758.

The figures belong to the landscape because the same touch animates the grass, the dresses and the sea

A large diagonal leads from the lower left corner to the right cliff. The two walkers occupy the summit without dominating the stage; the successive advances in the relief and the distant boats open the view towards the English Channel.

Greens, yellows and reds make the grass vibrate, while blue, white and mauve cross the sky and water. The colors of the clothing reflect those of the landscape, which keeps the figures in the unity of the surface.

Monet does not pose two portraits in front of a setting: he makes the dresses, the shawls and the parasol undergo the same fragmented light and the same wind as the grass on the cliff.

A diagonal that organizes the entire movement

The slope of the foreground connects the two figures to the rocky advances. It gives direction to the gaze without resorting to a road or a central vanishing point.

The clothes are constructed with brushstrokes close to those of the herbs. This continuity prevents walkers from appearing cut out and added to the landscape.

A reworked composition

X-rays from the Art Institute show that Monet reduced the rocky advance to the right in order to rebalance the proportions of sea and sky.

Keep sailboats very discreet

A few white and dark accents are enough on the sea. Their small size reinforces the distance without competing with the cliff.

Probably Marthe and Blanche Hoschedé

The museum probably identifies the two figures as the eldest daughters of Alice Hoschedé, who came to join Monet in Pourville with the family in June 1882.

The technical examination distinguishes between wet and wet applications and others placed on a dry layer. Monet worked together on the landscape and figures to maintain their unity.

Coburn legacy in 1933

The work belongs to the Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Larned Coburn Memorial Collection. It is numbered 1933.443 and is exhibited in gallery 240.
