Le Pavé de Chailly W56hand painted reproduction

A clear avenue crosses the Chailly forest and narrows towards an almost white gap. On the right, three large trunks occupy the foreground; on the left, autumn foliage forms a lower and more diffuse mass. Monet builds depth by road and trees, then animates this plant architecture with cold light and touches of green, ocher, mauve and blue.

Look at the work

The road and the gap in the sky transform the forest into a deep nave

The pavement enters from the bottom left then curves slightly towards the center. Light bands alternate with purple, gray and ocher traces. The trees align on each side like vertical supports, but their irregular spacing and branches avoid any strict symmetry.

On the right, the nearest trunk is cut by the upper and lower edges and gives the scale of the foreground. A very dark mass of shrubs is placed in front of the central gap. In the distance, the road, the sky and the foliage come together in a bluish light which makes the whole thing breathe.

The rigor of the forest avenue is continually softened by the branches, the colored shadows and the luminous irregularities of the ground.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An almost architectural perspective

The road and the two rows of trees converge towards a central opening. This stable construction recalls the interest of Barbizon painters in the Pavé de Chailly as a monumental gateway to the forest.

02

Plans distinguished by precision

The large trunk on the right is strongly shaped, the middle trees are more flexible and the bottom dissolves in cold light. The reduction in contrast creates distance without drawing every detail.

03

Color enlivens a traditional pattern

Olive greens, blue grays, mauves and ochres circulate in the trunks as well as in the ground. Monet therefore does not reserve a fixed shade for each object; he paints the lighting effects that connect them.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Pavé de Chailly, inventory RF 1672 of the Musée d'Orsay and Wildenstein number 56. The view of the frameless work is offered in a real WebP of 1,600 × 1,161 px.

Composition01

The large straight trunk remains very close

Its width, knots and cropping determine entry into the scene. It must dominate the trees at the back without becoming a uniform black silhouette.

Color02

The road has several light strips

Its whites contain blue, pink and gray, separated by green passages. This modulation makes the irregularity of the terrain and the filtering of light.

Matter03

Central gap is not empty

Fine trees, pale skies and mauve tones remain visible. Preserving these differences prevents the distance from becoming a flat white spot.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Dated around 1865, this oil on canvas measures 43.5 × 59.3 cm. It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory RF 1672 and listed Wildenstein 56.

Title01

An avenue de Chailly in the forest of Fontainebleau

The museum notice retains Le Pavé de Chailly as the main title and mentions Route du Bas-Bréau as another title. The place belongs to the territory frequented by Monet and Bazille during their outdoor campaigns.

Period02

Between Barbizon's legacy and a freer light

Monet uses a motif made famous by the landscapers who preceded him at Fontainebleau. The solidity of the trunks remains realistic, but the fragmentation of colors and cold shadows announce his impressionist research.

Donation03

The Moreau-Nélaton gift of 1906

Étienne Moreau-Nélaton kept the work until 1906, then gave it to the State with an important ensemble. Passed by the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume, it was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the convergence of the road and rows of trees.
  • Give the right trunk its prominent presence.
  • Color the central hole rather than leaving it white.
  • Circulate greens, blues, mauves and ochres between soil and foliage.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This forest avenue is suitable for a library, entrance or quiet living room. A smoked oak, walnut or bronze frame accompanies the trunks; a linen, sage green or mauve gray wall reveals the luminous depth.
