The bank of Zaandam stretches under a clear sky crossed by large clouds. On the right, wooden houses painted green and red appear behind a row of trees; on the left, a bell tower and a dome give the town its silhouette. The Zaan occupies the entire foreground, calm but animated by long touches of reflections. Painted in 1871, this oil on canvas measuring 47.8 × 73 cm is kept in the Orsay Museum under the number RF 1673. It corresponds to Wildenstein 183 and also bears the title Canal en Hollande.
Look at the work
The viewpoint is placed very low, near the water surface. The bank rises gently to the right and bears a succession of green and red gables partially hidden by the trunks. In contrast, the more distant buildings stand out under the sky and balance this high concentration of houses.
The river reflects mostly general light, not every building precisely. Blue grays and light browns extend horizontally; a few darker touches indicate a boat, the shore and small birds at the water's edge. The sky, built by wide white and blue beaches, responds to this surface without duplicating it.
The Musée d'Orsay retains this view under the title Zaandam, with Canal en Hollande as a complementary title. The painting entered the national collections through the Étienne Moreau-Nélaton donation of 1906.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The water's edge gradually rises towards the houses on the right. This gentle slope prevents the landscape from becoming a simple frieze and leads the gaze of distant bell towers towards the colorful facades.
Greens, reds and whites appear flat, broken between the trees. They give Zaandam his identity without breaking the unity of the ochres and blues of the landscape.
The large clouds are placed in large and irregular touches. Their rhythm gives air to the painting and reminds us that Monet's interest already focuses on changes in light as much as on the urban motif.

The single image exactly represents the RF 1673 and Wildenstein 183 inventory. The reference file measures 2160 × 1404 px after removing the photographic border; it remains at its native definition and is encoded in real WebP.
The slope supports the succession of houses and the depth of the canal. A strict horizontal line would make the scene static and move the bell towers.
These colors remain bright but never saturated in a decorative way. They must pass through the brown shadows of the trees and maintain their relationship with the reflections of the water.
The clouds are not smoothed. Brush marks, open blues and cream whites contribute to the material construction of the Dutch atmosphere.

The Musée d'Orsay documents Zaandam, oil on canvas from 1871, 47.8 × 73 cm, inventory RF 1673 and catalog Wildenstein 183.
After his exile in London during the Franco-Prussian War, he returned to the Netherlands with Camille and their son Jean. He painted around twenty-five landscapes of the Zaan region, attracted by colorful houses, mills and boats.
The painting first passes through Durand-Ruel then several Parisian collections. Given to the State in 1906, it then joined the Louvre, the Jeu de Paume and finally the Musée d'Orsay.
Its format of 47.8 × 73 cm, the RF number 1673 and the view with green and red houses allow it to be distinguished from the many other paintings by Zaandam executed the same year.
