Claude Monet · circa 1866 · still life of youth

The Peach Jarhand painted reproduction

A large jar of preserved fruit, four fresh peaches and a plate of veined marble: before the impressionist landscapes, young Monet already measured light by the textures it transformed.

Look at the work

Glass, fruit and marble offer three experiences of light

A jar filled with peaches is placed on a marble table next to four fresh fruits. The blue-green background remains almost empty in order to focus all attention on the glass, velvety skins, amber liquid and reflective surface.

The peaches in the jar appear yellower and more translucent than those placed on the table. Monet thus differentiates states of matter: fresh fruit, preserved fruit, amber liquid, transparent glass and cold stone. The dark signature closes the composition at the bottom right.

This still life not only tells what is placed on the table: it compares what light does to glass, fruit, liquid and marble.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Le Bocal de peaches - Claude Monet
01

The jar as a column

The large vertical shape occupies the left half. Its lid, reflections and superimposed peaches create a stable architecture above the agitated marble.

02

Costs versus retained

The outer fruits are matte, pink and slightly irregular. In the jar, the shapes become yellower and brighter under the effect of glass and liquid.

03

Marble as a broken mirror

White veins and dark reflections do not describe water. They belong to a polished marble slab that multiplies the directions in the foreground.

Glass, fruit and amber liquidThis detail reveals the vertical reflections on the jar, the variations of yellow and pink in the fruits, and the way in which the glass distorts their contours.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Title01

Das Pfirsichglas: The Peach Jar

The Dresden collection preserves this still life under its German title Das Pfirsichglas. The jar constitutes the vertical axis of the entire composition.

Youth02

Monet is around twenty-six years old

Created around 1866, the painting belongs to the painter's early years, before the first impressionist exhibition in 1874.

Collection03

A painting of the Albertinum

The work is kept at the Galerie Neue Meister des Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, at the Albertinum, under number 2525 B.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The transparency of the jar without whitening the glass
  • The differences between fresh and preserved fruit
  • The reflections of marble without confusing them with water
  • The large blue-green background, nuanced but silent

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The vertical format and the palette of petrol blue, amber and peach are suitable for a kitchen, dining room or still life composition. A dark frame or natural wood reinforces the contrast of the marble.
