Look at the work

The houses of Zaandam respond to the reflections of the canal

The right bank follows a diagonal which begins near the viewer and leads towards the bell tower. Green gables, red roofs and brown trunks form a lively succession. Trees do not erase houses: their ocher leaves allow fragments of facade and sky to pass through.

The canal occupies the entire foreground. Monet places short white, pink, blue and brown touches which record the undulations rather than perfectly symmetrical reflections. A small dark boat, placed near the center, measures the width of the water and maintains movement towards the distance.

Dutch architecture becomes color: gables and roofs extend into the water through a mosaic of moving reflections.

A bank built diagonally

The embankment and houses narrow towards the center left. This perspective gives the canal great depth despite the absence of rigid architectural lines.

Greens, reds and browns alternate between the trunks. Their rhythm distinguishes the houses while integrating them into the row of trees.

Water painted in short touches

The reflections do not copy each facade. They take the temperatures in small horizontals which make the surface vibrate.

Entering the national collections through the Moreau-Nélaton donation, the work was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
