Pears and grapes W631hand painted reproduction

On a white tablecloth tilted towards the viewer, Monet scatters yellow and green pears, bunches of light and black grapes, two red apples and long fern leaves. The table almost seems to tip out of the frame, but the fruits remain unified by their colored shadows. Signed and dated Claude Monet 1880 at the top left, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm is kept in the Hamburger Kunsthalle under the number HK-1568 and corresponds to Wildenstein 631.

Look at the work

An inclined tablecloth transforms the fruits into a colorful constellation

The white plateau rises diagonally from right to left and greatly reduces depth. The fruits are distributed around two groups of grapes, while the ferns cross the tablecloth and visually connect the separate elements.

The white of the canvas is never neutral: it receives blue, purple, green and yellow. The pears are shaped by oppositions of lemon yellow and pinkish brown; dark grapes concentrate the deepest values.

Still life is held together less by a symmetrical arrangement than by a circulation of colors: each fruit responds to another through the tablecloth.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately unstable table

The strong inclination brings the fruits closer to the plane of the painting and allows them to simultaneously see their volume, the tablecloth and the spread foliage.

02

Two clusters as density nuclei

Black grapes and light grapes bring together many small touches. They contrast with the simpler, larger volumes of pears.

03

Two red apples at the bottom edge

Separated from the main group, they balance the red signature at the top and prevent the composition from closing only in the center.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only official image of the Hamburger Kunsthalle measures 1,250 × 1,018 px. It is encoded in real WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the blue folds of the tablecloth

They give the relief of the fabric and prevent it from becoming a uniform white background without depth.

Color02

Preserve the variety of pears

Each fruit has a different temperature, from cold green to pink ocher; this diversity is essential to the rhythm of the whole.

Matter03

Keep ferns free and discontinuous

Their rapid painting should remain lighter than fruit, with visible reserves between the leaflets.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Hamburger Kunsthalle documents Pears and Grapes, oil on canvas from 1880, 65 × 81 cm, signed and dated top left, inventory HK-1568 and catalog Wildenstein 631.

Period01

A still life in the heart of the years 1878-1882

The museum places this painting in the phase where Monet intensely takes up the genre and applies his research on color and light to similar objects.

Construction02

A table covered in white fabric

The instructions emphasize the pronounced diagonal of the tray and the free distribution of pears, grapes, apples and ferns throughout the surface.

Collection03

Early acquisition in Germany

After Monet, the painting belonged to Th. Delius then moved to Durand-Ruel. The Verein von Kunstfreunden von 1870 acquired it to offer it to the Kunsthalle.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 631 version
  • The inclined white tablecloth
  • The light and black clusters
  • The ferns that pass through the composition
