Look at the work

A cultural road leads the eye to the houses of the suburb

The lines of the furrows and the path converge towards the center right. The farmer, placed almost in the middle of the canvas, gives the scale of the plots and transforms this view of the periphery into a real-life scene.

On the left, the foliage is constructed by a multitude of small green, yellow and blue touches. On the right, the light facade cuts through the sky and reminds us that this cultivated landscape is already in contact with the city.

Periphery of Paris: road with a peasant carrying a spade is an oil on canvas of 48 × 73 cm painted in June - July 1887. The work F361/JH1260 today belongs to a private collection in the United States.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

During his stay in Paris, Van Gogh searched for the still rural edges of the capital. This painting combines a very readable perspective with a fragmented touch, nourished by the impressionist and neo-impressionist research that he then discovered.

01

The furrows organize all the depth

Their oblique bands start widely from the foreground then tighten near the peasant. They lead the eye towards the small white houses and red roofs.

02

The farmer connects rural work and the urban landscape

Its dark silhouette, its spade resting on the shoulder and its frontal movement occupy the point of convergence. It remains tiny facing trees and crops.

03

Light is born from juxtaposed keys

Greens, yellows, pinks and blues are not melted evenly. Their neighborhood vibrates the foliage, the sky and the light ground without erasing the design of the road.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F361/JH1260, the horizontal format of 48 × 73 cm and the dating from June - July 1887 identify this version. It should not be confused with other views of the fortifications and suburbs painted by Van Gogh in Paris.

Subject

The market gardening belt of Paris

Before the complete urbanization of the suburbs, gardens, fields and homes rub shoulders at the gates of the capital. Van Gogh makes this transition his real subject.

Paris

A palette that has become significantly lighter

Compared to brown earths from the Dutch period, the Parisian range opens up to blue, soft green, yellow and pink, applied in small distinct touches.

Scale

A landscape built around a single figure

The market gardener is not a decorative detail: his position fixes the distance, animates the road and makes the extent of the crops measurable.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the convergence of the paths, the small silhouette carrying its spade, the regular alternation of crops, the leafy mass on the left and the very light buildings at the back.

  • The farmer and his spade in the center
  • The furrows converging towards the bottom
  • Foliage dotted with green and yellow
  • The red roofs between the trees
  • The white facade which closes the right edge
