Claude Monet · Fresselines · 1889 · W1231
An old oak tree stands in front of the steep slopes of the Petite Creuse, whose clear water turns at the foot of colorful rocks. Painted in 1889, this 65.9 × 93.1 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under number 1922.432 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1231.

Look at the work
The trunk rises slightly to the left of the center and separates two rocky slopes. The river meanders at the bottom of the composition then disappears behind the right slope; the sky is reduced to a clear opening above the hills.
Purple, blue, ocher, green and pink fragment the cliffs. The dark branches of the oak stand out on the light slope, while the water receives horizontal touches of white, blue and lilac.
To maintain the winter appearance already begun, Monet had the new leaves removed from the oak: the actual pattern was adjusted to the time of painting.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The old oak serves as a stable landmark in three views near the Petite Creuse. Its silhouette allows you to compare changes in framing, light and color.
The slopes are not shaped by traditional chiaroscuro. Pink, green, blue and purple touches indicate hollows and rocky outcrops.
The Art Institute emphasizes that the twenty-four landscapes brought back from the Creuse constitute Monet's first campaign conceived as a rigorous set of variations.
Reference image
Only one exact image of W1231 is used. The real WebP measures 3000 × 2111 px and comes from the Art Institute of Chicago's high-definition IIIF file, without artificial enlargement.
Its irregular branches must remain thin and legible without being decorative. They structure the middle of the canvas and precisely identify W1231.
Ocher and rose move forward, blue and purple move back. Their balance gives the relief of the ravine without rigid contours.
Horizontal keys follow the water curve. They must remain separate to reflect reflections and current speed.
Documented benchmarks
The Art Institute of Chicago documents The Petite Creuse River, oil on canvas from 1889, 65.9 × 93.1 cm, signed Claude Monet lower left, inventory 1922.432 and Wildenstein 1231.
Returning to the web later in the spring, Monet discovered that the new leaves hid his pattern. He hires workers to remove them and regain the appearance started in April.
The museum's technical study identifies a prepared linen canvas, close to the standard format 65 × 92 cm, with the stamp of the color merchant Troisgros Frères on the reverse.
The work enters the Art Institute with the Potter Palmer collection and is numbered 1922.432. It is today exhibited in gallery 240.
