The old oak fixes a landscape that spring transforms

The trunk rises slightly to the left of the center and separates two rocky slopes. The river meanders at the bottom of the composition then disappears behind the right slope; the sky is reduced to a clear opening above the hills.

Purple, blue, ocher, green and pink fragment the cliffs. The dark branches of the oak stand out on the light slope, while the water receives horizontal touches of white, blue and lilac.

To maintain the winter appearance already begun, Monet had the new leaves removed from the oak: the actual pattern was adjusted to the time of painting.

Process01

A leafless oak at Monet's request

Returning to the web later in the spring, Monet discovered that the new leaves hid his pattern. He hires workers to remove them and regain the appearance started in April.

The museum's technical study identifies a prepared linen canvas, close to the standard format 65 × 92 cm, with the stamp of the color merchant Troisgros Frères on the reverse.

The work enters the Art Institute with the Potter Palmer collection and is numbered 1922.432. It is today exhibited in gallery 240.
