À propos de l’œuvre
Fille dans les bois, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1882 · The Hague, Netherlands
Girl in the Woods, F8aReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A young girl dressed in dark walks to the right of a beech tree whose gigantic roots invade the foreground. Van Gogh gives less room to the story than to the vertical thrust of the trees and the vast red ground.
Look at the work
A little walker dominated by roots
The central trunk, very light, unfolds into long blue and olive green roots. On the right, the young girl in a black dress and white hat holds a small basket; she seems almost tiny facing the tree.
The undergrowth opens behind her in successive strips: ocher ground, alignment of trunks, then pale yellow light in the distance. The large free space on the right gives the walker a precise direction.
Girl in the Woods F8a/JH180 is an oil on canvas mounted on panel measuring 34.7 × 47.3 cm, painted in The Hague in August 1882. The work belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
F8a is a composition distinct from F8. The figure wears a dark outfit and appears on the right, while a light beech and its roots occupy the center of the painting.
The roots run through the foreground
Their radiant design starts from the central trunk and stretches to the edges. They transform the ground into an almost graphic structure.
Figure gives scale
The girl is small enough that the height of the trees seems considerable. Her pale cap and basket are enough to make her readable.
Ocher unifies the forest
Red soil covers a large part of the surface. Dark blues, moss greens and light yellows cut out the trunks and distances.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The sales instructions document an oil on canvas mounted on a 34.7 × 47.3 cm panel. The references F8a/JH180 make it possible to distinguish it from F8 kept in Otterlo.
F8a is not F8
In F8a, the girl in black stands to the right of a light tree. In F8, the girl in white with the red cap appears between several massive trunks.
A painting passed through the family
The work belonged to Anna Cornelia Carbentus, Vincent's mother, before passing through several Dutch and then private collections.
The figure in the landscape
Van Gogh wrote then that he did not want to completely separate landscape and figure. The little walker here transforms the study of trees into a real-life scene.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must maintain the desired disproportion between the girl and the beech, the long dark roots, the continuous ocher soil, the light cap and the luminous opening at the bottom.
- The large beige trunk in the center
- Blue and dark green roots
- The little black silhouette on the right
- The light hat and the basket
- The tight rhythm of distant trees
